5/13/08 Philadelphia Daily News, PA Quote:
ROBERT "Big Bob" Burkett, a self-employed truck driver and a man who was always ready to help if family members or friends needed him, died May 9 after a long battle with cancer. He lived in Overbrook Park.
"Bob was always available to his family and friends," his family said. "Whether it was to grab a cup of coffee and share in conversation, or help out in any way. He could always be counted on."
He was born in Philadelphia to Robert Burkett and the former Jean Farley. He graduated from West Philadelphia High School.
Bob lived in Southwest Philadelphia and Overbrook Park for more than 40 years. As a truck driver, he contracted with PDQ Trucking and G&P Trucking for more than 15 years.
"He was a happy-go-lucky man," said his brother-in-law, James "Jake" Wood. "He was a hard-worker and a real family man. Any sports events his kids and grandkids were involved in, he was there."
Bob also liked to take the family to Disney World in Florida - "a source of great joy for Bob in recent years," his family said. "He loved the magic of Disney."
Bob enjoyed a number of hobbies, including photography, model trains and electronics. He liked to kick back and watch Western films and listen to old radio programs.
"He was in his best moments when surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and extended family, all of whom he loved very much," his family said. Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Ellen F. Wood; a daughter, Tara Carfrey; a son, Christopher Burkett, and grandchildren, Chelsea and Colin. He was predeceased by a brother, James. http://www.philly.com/dailynews/obit...__trucker.html | |
