Goodbye Austin

On monday' April 27.2009, we lost my wife's uncle in a truck accident. He was 75.

His name was Austin Wrenn and he had been a trucker for 49 years. He was the reason I started driving and is one of my heroes.

The accident happened on westbound I40 in NC near exit 283 (Raleigh). Apparently, he had made his final drop and was headed home to Roxboro, when he came upon a traffic jam caused by another accident a couple of miles ahead. He slowed down and a 4 wheeler cut into his lane. He locked down the brakes causing the truck to jackknife and hit the guardrail. the truck caught fire and he was pinned between the rail and his trailer. He died in the fire and his 1993 Ford Aero Max, along with the trailer was completely destroyed.

Austin was old school. He loved his God, his family and his job; in that order. He had seen a lot of changes in this business; good and bad. Some he liked; some he didn't. He did his job and took care of his business with no fanfare or complaints. He was a TRUCKER.

Goodbye Austin. I'll miss you.

I am so sorry to hear of your family's tragedy. The older generation of truckers set a great example for the younger drivers to follow, and hopefully they will. I'm sure Austin loved doing what he did, and I'm sure many of us have benefited from all of his many many loads. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
