Unhappy A letter I wrote.

I wrote this letter after my wife had a miscarriage earlier this year. Writing the letter helped me through the tough period. Recently my wife's friend had a miscarriage and it reminded me of this letter and I though this would be a good forum to share it.

A Letter to my unborn child
By
Patrick M. Valdez

Dear Jr.

Just thought I’d write you this letter. I know I’ll never be able to deliver it to you but somehow I think you’ll be able to read it.

For some reason it was decided that you were not to be born. Just one of those things that can’t be explained I guess. But we’re not mad at you. We loved you. For the brief time you were with us you brought us such happiness. It was a pleasant surprise when your mom came home and told me she was carrying you. We were so excited we had to tell everyone. We celebrated. You were our first and we were so overjoyed.

Your mom and I would lie in bed talking about you and wondering what you would be like, would you be an early riser like her or a late bloomer like I me, would you resemble my side of the family or hers? Among so many things we talked about involving you. It was an exciting time for the both of us. We even gave you the nickname “Jr.”.

I took your mom up to where I took her on our second date to look over the town and we talked about how lucky our child will be, to not only have such loving parents, but a loving extended family, all who were anticipating your arrival.

But you were taken away. I’ll never forget the moment I knew you were gone. Your mom and I feel such pain but we know you’ve gone to a place where you will never feel the pain and hurt that we feel and for that we are truly thankful. I don’t know how long we will hurt but I would rather feel the hurt than to not have felt the joy.

Just remember, you were wanted and loved. We won’t ever forget you. You might not have been our first born but you will always be our first child. Your mother and I love you very much.

Take care,

Your father, Patrick

I don't think there was anyone that I sent that letter to that didn't cry. Even my dad shed a tear and I've never seen him do that.

But the way we see it, we still have plenty of time to retry in the future. My wife is 23 and I'm not THAT old yet.

We do have a lot of family support. They may be spread all over the country but they do send us their prayers.

That was so beautiful!
Someone once told me that our children are our greatest joy and our greatest heart ache.
