Hayes won over 500 regional and national championships in go-kart, midget and sprint racing and competed in NASCAR Winston Cup before undergoing sex-reassignment surgery in 1994 at age 30. During the two years she transitioned from man to woman, the Corinth, Miss., native raced throughout the South and California, wrapping an Ace bandage over her breasts to flatten them out ("Boys Don't Cry"-style), wearing baggy T shirts and tucking her long hair under a baseball cap. Now as Terri O'Connell, she's had very little luck breaking back into the racing world. O'Connell still lives in Corinth with her elderly mother and is working on a clothing line for female NASCAR fans. The petite redhead is also writing a memoir, "Dangerous Curves," (due this fall). The reason he/she isn't able to find a ride in Nascar is that the teams are all looking at 18-20 year olds. As a 43 year old female, her/his chances of breaking into Nascar are pretty slight. Add in potential controversy in the middle of the bible belt, and I'd say the chances are zero.

Misleading I think the headline of this thread is somewhat misleading. J.T. Hayes drove in only one NASCAR race. I admit that just qualifying at that level is an accomplishment. I also found a finishing order for a World of Outlaws event at Calistoga where he finished about 17th. There again, just running with the Outlaws is something to be proud of. But my guess is that all of J.T.'s championships were in go-carts. I have been a racing fan for 50 years and never heard of the guy.
