My husband is leaving in about a week to work for Star out of Morton, IL. There are other companies he would rather work for but most companies right now are either on a hiring freeze or only take experienced drivers. He wanted to go with Maverick but because he has a DUI on his record (which is almost 10 years old now) they said he'd have to have 6 months experience. Star is pretty much the only company that would offer him a job and he has no OTR experience. I just want to get an idea of what kind of miles we should expect him to get and what the pay will be like. Can anyone here tell us anything?

As part of my CDL school my class went to a nearby T/A truck stop where we talked to drivers from several companies, and one that I talked to was from Star. He said that he has been with them for just over 5 years and he is happy at the time. His truck seemed to be in pretty good condition and he said they took good care of it for him and he never had any problem with maintanence. He said he had been a trainer for them but it was his preferrence to return to solo driving.
We also had a recruiter at the school from Star and he gave us quite a bit of info. Trucks can be taken home, provided you have a safe, appropriate place to park them. Starting pay for student drivers comes with 2 options: I belive they are either .20 per mile plus .08 per mile per diem plus tuition reimbursment at $100 per month total of either $3000 or $3600 total reimbursment ( not sure which it was) or .22 per mile plus .08 mile per diem with no tuition reimbursment. The pamphlet says training can be 6 to 8 weeks and training pay is $70 per day up to $350 per week. If you can get their number and call HR you could talk to Courtney there to make sure of these numbers. I can't find all my papers right now and am trying to do them from memory.
I do know that one of our job placement people at school told me the other day that a student that was sent home from Werner went to Star and he loves it there. -
All the I can tell you is that you do not want to go there.I had a frend worked for them and they did not pay for his school like they told him. He worked for them 1.5 yr's and when they told him that he can take the truck back to the trmenal and do his paperwork they still put some bad marks on his DAC.. Now he works a 9 to 5 so that he can pay his bills and the school that they did not pay for.

I don't know much about them, but I used to go by their terminal in Morton quite often. Ran by there less than a month ago probably (first time in a long time) and I couldn't believe how many trucks and trailers they had sitting there. I've never seen the lot so full. Trailers were stacked in like cord-wood. Just bumper to front, so you know they had to be empty.
Also, I heard from someone where I work (another driver) that Star had lost a bunch of their Cat contracts, but I don't know if that is true or not. I've ran into guys who worked the Cat dedicated and loved it with them. Their trucks are all Pete's with Cat's and 13 speed trannies. -
Howdy, I too am starting with Star Transport on Mon. the 20th. I have heard some good and some bad... I just graduated from Roadmaster and am excited to hit the road. Any info/ advice you guys can give to a newbie or about Star (out of morton, Ill.) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance -
Well, I can relay my experiences with them, and answer your questions.I worked with them for over a year. Yes, you can take your truck home. They started out at .28 cents per mile when I was there couple years ago. Most of the equipment is ok. They really, really want you to get the haz-mat endorsement, and will hound you until you get it lol. But they will let you start without it. Daytime dispathers were ok, some of em, nightime dispatch was hilarious. Hilariously bad.
After you get there, after you leave your school, you have an orientation, basic stuff, physical, drug test, paperwork. They put you up at adays inn right there beside the terminal. Not real bad motel, you have to share, but heck you got a taco bell and more right beside you.
Then you wait on a trainer to come pick you up and you head out with em, for normally 4-6 weeks, 4 unless you're retarded. Then you come back, another orientation, then you get your truck. Funny memoery - the truck they assigned to me at first - I walked up to it, and it looked ok from a distance. As i walked around it, it looked like it had hit a bear, and then the bear climbed in the truck and tore the heck out of it. I walked right back and had em give me another one. But most of their equipment aint that bad.
You also have to remember - Star hires all of their people out of school, make you sign a 1 yr contract, then most leave cause they pay you .28 a mile. So most of their drivers are inexperienced except for some of the trainers. Oh, and as far as them paying off your school, you'll need a lawyer in alot of cases. I know firsthand buddies that were in my class that did not get their loans paid off. Seriously. Mine was set up slightly different, so I was ok.
They run east of the miss. for the most part, some texas and minn.
They put that I abandoned my truck, when i was told to bring it to another driver. Will update on that later, as it is as yet unresolved, I thought it had been fixed, but nope. That's really my biggest gripe with em. They got me homw atleast every other weekend, alot of times every wkend. Had alot of good points for a training company. We ran mostly paper rolls and Cat parts, but yes, they have lost alot of cat stuff cause cat has lost of cat stuff lol. They are struggling like the rest of em, the ONLY reason they survive is cause they pay .28 a mile.
So, hope that helps, any more questions just ask. And good luck.
Oh, there is a ruby tuesday's acroos the street, I recommend it highly for the eye candy -
