I applied and was excepted to Steven transport some 8 months ago. My reciter said to check in every week to confirm that I was still coming on Oct. 20th, which I have done. Because I haven't driven commercially in 10 years I needed to take a refresher course for $3000. I was OK with that. Now as I was putting everything together and bought my airfare ($200.) I was informed that the refresher course is $6000. I had to say goodbye to Stevens. I'm just not going on the hook for 6K. It would take Years to pay that back, and I'm just not going to do that. I was so looking forward to driving for Stevens.

Why did the price double? Are these Stevens prices or a private CDL school? Can you do a refresher course or even the initial course at Stevens?

I don't know what happened. I got a new recuiter because my original one left. Then the story changed. I thought I was going to take a refresher (as I have my CDL etc.) but it seemed that I was signed up for a three week course at 6K plus. Anyway, that knocks me out of the box. Very disappointed .

$6000.00 for a refresher? Good lord. There are other companies that I would think give you a refresher for less than 6k.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Check with your recruiter about tuition forgiveness. There is usually a program that says if you drive for them for so long the balance is 'forgiven'. Now I don't know the specifics, but it use to be you were charged 25.00 per week, deducted from your earnings and after one year the balance was 'forgiven'. I suspect the raise in price is to give the potential student a 'greater value' for coming with Stevens and greater incentive to stay that first year.
If you leave early, you will be charged the full balance and they do squeeze blood from a rock!
But this gives them the ability to offer 'thousands of dollars in bonuses' for staying.
Not sure, since I don't deal in that area anymore, but I suspect it's like that.

Midwest-coast Transport full CDL program is only 3 weeks and it's free if you stay a year. That would be better than a refresher since there's been so many changes the past few years.

Going through a full course would give you more range time and more road time, which would be good. The only thing you wouldn't have to do is retake the state CDL test. And if it costs less, well, another benefit.

I don't know for sure, of course, but my guess is most companies are going to do that, if they don't already. The freight is increasing and drivers are getting harder to find and keep; that's one reason the pay keeps going up.

But, oh, do I understand how disappointing it can be not get on with your first choice. Stevens was mine long ago, but I didn't get through the medical. I was not nearly as happy with my next choice, though I did get hired.

I know out of the five companies I mentioned with refresher courses Celadon and KLLM don't charge. You just need to agree to drive for them for a period of time. I know with Celadon it's 6 months and I believe KLLM is the same or a year. They both also have their own school and they are free if you agree to work with them for a period of time as well. I know what your going through because I'm going through it as well. I'm getting back into trucking and I haven't driven in 13 years. I hope this may have been of some help to you and good luck. :biggrin_25519:
