greyhound bus driver's strike

several years ago the greyhound bus drivers were on strike. i was co-driving with a more experienced driver at that time and we were heading down to Florida. i was driving, southbound on I-295 in New Jersey, near the end of that highway, just before the Delaware Memorial Bridge. i pulled into the truckstop down there a Pilot, to shop for a radar detector (not illegal back then). i was now pulling out and heading to the highway on ramp. i was accelerating, and had my turn signals on.

it was about 3 am, and a very slight fog/drizzle was present. as i was now getting onto the main highway (I-295), a greyhound bus (with a scab driver) was far behind me, as well as a flatbedder. the greyhound driver never changed lanes till it was too late for him. he swerved into the left lane and lost control of the bus. he started to go sideways down the highway. he then caught some traction, and plowed into my (then new) rig, a 1992 Pete 379.

he then loses control again and starts to go sideways, now into the median, and occassionally getting traction and ramming me. all this time, my co-driver had been yelling at me, he thought i was doing something wrong, as he was knocked of the bunk out of a sound sleep.

when we both came to a stop, so did the flatbed driver. the greyhound bus driver, for whatever reason, thought the flatbedder was me, and right there admitted fault, he was sleepy. this flatbedder (my witness) then told the NJ state tropper that the bus driver admitted fault. the troppers questioned the scab bus driver, and he admitted fault to them as well.

the trooper promptly pulled out his ticket book and wrote him up "failure to maintain vehicle control", and "reckless driving, personal injury", as the bus had a full load of people.

the troopers let me go, saying that the bus driver should pretty much be finished in his career.

just about every passenger on that bus went to the hospital that night. rescue squad, after rescue squad, private ambulance after ambulance keep coming and going. heck, 60 people are a lot to transport.

i often wonder where that scab driver is now these days.........
