Sounds like they should've stopped at Bonneville and set a record or two.

I know what you are saying. I drove one that was about the same way. 88 international with a 444 boosted to 720+ to the ground 13 Double Over 13th was .5 to 1 3.55 rears and 24.5 TALL RUBBER. thing would climb like a striped ### ape but when you needed to FLY it was bye bye. April of 1997 my mother had a heart attack and I was on my way to the house anyways. At the time she was critical not expected to live thru the night and bossman called IL for an escort (he was a MAJOR donater to the Police Ball and IL State trooper Association so they agreed. I tore thru IL to get home.

Most of the truck stops had fuel attendants that pumped the fuel for you and cleaned your windows for you. There was a stop in Georgia that would even wash your tractor off while they were fueling it.

WOW - this thread brings back memories! How can you remember the dates and places from soooo many years ago? I musta inhaled too much CO2 in too many bunks with leaky exhaust pipes on them old cabovers???

I was at the doctors today and we were talking about trucks and truckin and he was asking how you shift one a them big rigs. I was explaining how Back in The Day I used to put my arm thru the steering wheel and hold it with my elbow while I worked those 2 sticks in a B63 with a Super Powerful Thermodyne going up the mountains in NC with a hundred cars lined up behind me... but going slow was a blessing 'cause it was less painful when you hit a pothole!

I remember a place in south Lousiana that had a pressure washer out washing the windshield and cleaning out the radiators of every truck that bought fuel during the little black bug season. They were so bad that year the only part of the front of the truck that wasn't black was the smeared area where the wipers wiped.

Don't remember what the bugs were, as I haven't seen them much since. I always get bugs through there, but nothing like back then. This was in 1976.

Those lovely little black critters would be Love Bugs! East Texas and Louisiana have em, don't remember when mating season is but them things stick better than most glues! They fly around with there tails together doing the wild thing and a car wash nozzle just barely fazes their remnants.

You drivers from the 50`s and 60`s are what made me a driver.I remember as a boy in the early 60`s playing in my 2 uncles Ford shop in Afton,Va. watching the trucks climb the mountain up old Rt.151-most running so slow they could walk beside the truck, some standing on the running board, all blowing the hornand waving at the kid going nuts on the side of the road. Also remember how slow they came down the mountain.
My first o\o trip hauling Holly Farms chicken to Ky.,I managed to "permit" my truck in 22 states before I got to WV.Rarely ever asked for paperwork but when you were it was expensive($585 on a $1100 load for example).Loved the thrill of getting away with something. That alwats makes this job fun.
I`ve always been crazy over any old truck or car.Fatcab Pete`s,old KW`s and Emeryvilles are my favorites.
