Before the Ice Road Truckers...

... there was the Overland Train.

Built by LeTourneau Heavy Equipment of Longview, TX, the Mk I featured a 600-hp diesel-electric articulated tractor, with electric motors in the wheels of the tractor and trailer.

The Mk I pulled four trailers for the US Army's DEW construction project in Alaska during the Korean War. The 10-foot-tall tires floated over snow that a man couldn't walk on. Two were built.

The Mk II had true steering of all six wheels, as well as the trailer wheels. Because of the steerable trailers, the Mk II could pull up to 570 feet of trailers.

Mk II was never put into service.

I know it's a long shot, but do any of you old hands have any experience on these? My dad served in Alaska during the Korean War and saw the Mk I a few times, but that's as close as I've come to it.
