I am will be starting school next week. I am debating between, Swift, conway, and werner. I have a family at home but am willing to do what it takes to make the most money. What kinda miles and money are you making here in AZ. I am willing to travel wherever the loads take me.

ahh okay. I was going to say that the Phoenix Swift school no longer takes out of state residents.

I team with my husband for Swift. We were OTR and as a team we saw better miles than solos. Now we're on a dedicated Wal-Mart fleet and so we see very steady good miles. We run between 5-6 k a week with a 34 hr reset each week so we're running around 800-1000 miles per day on an average. I don't know that my info will help you since we're a team.

Do you know of anyone not on a team with swift? That I could get in contact with. As of yet I haven't paid out anything. I have a wife and kids at home, but am willing to do what it takes to make ends meet. I am not looking to get rich, but I would like to make good money if I am going to be on the road. How did you get onto a dedicated team, it seems that that might be the way to go right now.

There's a number of solo Swift drivers on this forum. I suggest going to the Swift sub-forum and begin reading the threads. You'll find a large number of subjects including this discussed.

The solo drivers on our fleet work a sliding scale. this means they make a higher cent per mile on lower miled runs. We also get paid per dock or delivery that's made to a store. There's also diversity among the solo drivers. Some are "day" drivers which mean they only drive locally and make deliveries to stores. Some solos take loads to CA, NV and UT as well as local deliveries and they will pick up back hauls.

As a team we almost never just make a local delivery. If we make a pure delivery run it's a long distance one to stores in UT, northen AZ or CA. And most of our runs begin with deliveries and then we pick up backhauls to our distribution center or else to another DC where we'll deliver and then pick up something coming to our DC.

Most dedicated fleets have waiting lists and usually they take drivers with 2 or more years OTR. However there is the beer run fleet that takes new drivers. It's done purely day drivers. They take an empty trailer and meet a driver with a load halfway between the beer plant and Phoenix. They swap trailers and return.

    I'm rambling to much.

It is possible to get onto a dedicated fleet with a small amount of experience. We did. We attribute it to God. We got a phone call one day out of the blue and we were invited by the fleet manager to come talk to him and join the fleet. It's pretty rare.

Another way is if your mentor is on a dedicated fleet. As a trainee you'll meet the fleet staff and the fleet manager and thus you'll have a foot in the door. If there's an opening and you've done a good job as a trainee plus let it be known you'd like to be on the fleet, the fleet manager will consider you because you're a known quantity.

I've probably babbled to much and caused confusion. sorry
