Nothing personal here, but with all the GPS and Satellite capabilities "Sneaking" may not be possible, and a Port job requires a driver that can be trusted.
"Sneaking" anywhere is a good way to lose your TWIC Card not to mention getting terminated.
As a former DEA pilot I'm here to tell you we caught a lot of people who were "Sneaking" and thinking they were unobserved.
You might go to Mexico and maybe look for smuggling opportunities (To NAS: I'm just joking here)............................

Figure of speech. Meaning getting home more often then normal. Like every couple days or everyday.

    Your an idiot.

I don't know how often they get home but one would think with a vehicle in the Phx yard, you could drive home every other night or for your 34 once a week, doing the Phx to LA intermodal. I know whenever Steve gets the chance to do a 10 at home leaving his truck in the yard he does. I suspect most drivers do when going through their home terminal or even visiting friends and family when they are near them as well. As for the Phx to LA intermodal I don't know how they work but I do know the milage is short >400 LA to Phx but with traffic etc. it can be all you can do in a day to get loaded drive then unloaded, so one would hope they compensate the intermodal drivers differently, then just the cpm.

Hmm that's a good point. I would hope so to. One run a every two days would be roughly 800 miles. But of course there is traffic and that would eat up maybe an hour altogether everyday. It would be good if I could run 800 miles every two days all week and never have to do a 34. And be able to go home everyday or every other day. I do keep a car at phx term for hometime so that would be perfect.

Thanks for the reply and advice.

I read in other posts that each load pays $17 in addition to cmp. Not much, but an extra $60 or so each week. If that's the case

I don't know if you're still looking for answers about this, but I drove the fleet for about 9 months in 2012.

Miles were probably somewhere between 2000-2300 / week.

A lot of the port fleet work is along the Mexican border, to Yuma, Calexico, and Otay Mesa. You'll get back to Phoenix, but you're not going to run PHX-LB-PHX-LB-PHX-LB-PHX and sleep in your own bed 3 times a week. You will get home nearly every weekend for at least 36 hours.

If you don't get out of the port and onto the 710 by about 1:30pm it's going to take you about 3 hours to get out past Riverside; that's 80 miles in 3 hours.

You're not going to get any additional per trip pay, but what's pretty awesome is that the Phoenix yard has empty containers and serves as the shipper or final for any live load you pick up in the valley or any live unload that terminates here. So, let's say you're going to pick up a load of recycled paper to go outbound to the port: your trip originates at the terminal where you'll get your empty container and crack a joke to Adam at the container window about how Young Poong (the paper recycling company) would figure to be an import load rather than an export load, you'll then roll over to 35th and Indian School and have your container loaded, then you'll roll to the port and drop. Because your trip originated in the Swift yard you'll actually get paid for an additional stop at your shipper. The trip is credited to you as Swift (pick up), Young Poong (stop 1) and the port (stop 2). This allows you to rack up at least a couple of payments for additional stops each week.

You can never decline a trip. On the other hand there's really no reason to refuse any trip on this fleet.

Nearly every trip will be dispatched late, so a simple qualcomm message stating that you'll take the trip if it's okay to deliver late. It almost always will be, and driving on the port fleet is like a permanent "get out of service failures free" card.

For whatever reason the port fleet is also responsible for southern Cali and Yuma Petsmart loads. These are dry van loads that always pick up around 10pm at 75th and Roosevelt and will almost always have two or three stops and terminate somewhere in or around San Diego, so this is another way that you'll pick up a little extra coin. The Petsmart employees are ALWAY prompt and always cool. You're never gonna wait around to be unloaded unless it's the 3am stop at Yuma and the manager guy stopped at Circle K for a cup of coffee on the way into work and he's running 5 minutes late. Tell the thrash metal chick at the Encinitas Petsmart store that I love her.

There's an awesome little fish and chips place on Terminal Island on Tuna street right outside the exit from the Evergreen terminal, and a couple of blocks west of the APL bobtail entrance.

I am. Miles are between 1800 to 2800. Lots of van and jit loads recently. When container loads are low and they just added alot of people but they also kick people out for 1) high value load violations 2) not checking chassis registration. They send you anywhere you want on the weekend but have to be back on Monday with some hrs to do a Otay mesa run.
