That's the intentions of this post I'm not asking advice on whether I should lease or not.

As far as the numbers go I didn't have any clue what the FSC is so that was a fairly major factor in my calculations that didn't add up (I was assuming it was less). I'm just crunching numbers trying to get a good idea of what a monthly profit/loss statement would look like leasing a truck. And what other expenses are involved other than the obvious expenses such as fuel, maintenance, insurance, taxes, lease payment etc.

Everybody is expendable ... but keep in mind if Swift looses you they now have a lease payment to cover. It's not in their financial interest to have an O/O fail.

Oh and with Swift, not only do we have the right to refuse loads, we have access to an outside broker that we can book our own loads with directly.

    Broccelli Thanks this.

Thanks again to all the helpful posts (mystic, squeak, and moose) and I continue to welcome more as I would like to get a real solid grasp from a successful L/O's perspective. And I am sure this info will be helpful to others as well.

And nor would I give it. It works for me in my situation. That doesn't mean it will work in yours.

Since nobody has actually answered your questions I give it a try.

1: Fuel surcharge (or fuel rebate bucause that's what it really is) varies week to week. Last week it was $.453 per loaded mile. Unless you are on a dedicated account you will not be paid FSC on MT miles.

2: Swift calls it a maintaince account but it's a savings account to me. You can put between $.03-$.20 per dispatched mile into the maintaince account and access it for anything you desire. It's your money.

3: There are 4 states that charge road use tax, OR, NM, KY, & NY. NM, KY, & NY are all in the $.04 per mile range and collect IFTA taxes as well. OR collects around $.16 per mile (of which you pay about $.13) but does not collect IFTA. I avoid OR and seem to spend about $40 a month in NM. Most months I'm ahead on my IFTA taxes only to have NM use up the surplus. For more information go to: www.iftach.org/taxmatrix3/choose_tableq2.php

4: No idea. I'm an 05 division OTR driver.

5: MT miles are $.81 with no FSC. Again, if you get on a dedicated you will probably get paid the loaded mile rate for ALL dispatched miles.

6: You will know the ballon payment amount BEFORE you sign the contract. It varies depending on the truck but is generally in the low $40,000 range.

    I hope this helps.

Ahhh. Booking ones own loads takes this discussion in a different direction.

Greatly appreciated but don't discredit mystic he has answered several of the questions (answered within my quotes in his post).

Btw Steve, were you headed west on I-10 in TX around noon or so? I think I saw you around the van horn area.

I stand corrected. When I see a quoted response I tend to overlook it. My appologizes. All I really noticed were the lease bashers. Again, sorry.
