Let me add that I am not against paying drivers more, contrarily I think they should be paid more but I don't think companies should be forced to pay anyone anything. If a company wanted to ask someone to do the work for free they should be allowed to do so. No one would work for them for free though.
I think a lot of professions should pay more but that is not up to me that is up to the employer as it should be.
In a perfect world everyone would be paid handsomely and no one would be hungry. But we don't live in that world and if you want to make more money it is up to you to seek that out. No law should be required to give it to you, you should develop the initiative and go get it.
I'm just tired of drivers complaining about pay and expecting a hand-out when there are endless opportunities out there to make money, you just have to change your way of thinking.

More fuel efficient trucks might put a dent in the cost of the fuel compared to 10 years ago if they all tripled how much they got per gallon but umm nope. Let take a low ball 5 mpg of then (oh wait many still have them) compared to what do some of these new fangled emission junk trucks thats in the shop almost as much as on the road get 8? 9? That is a long ways from tripling but it makes you feel better so good for it.
I am not saying needs to be a law to pay so much I just dont get it these companies used to pay top dollar and respected their drives but thats gone down hill. And that comes back to just like I seen else where kids inherit or take over and it more drivers equals more for us instead of getting quality and paying for it its quantity.
If they gave each driver a .05cpm raise and kept each good truck an extra 6 months that would almost off set each other. (Just my opinion)
Btw I own my truck no payments and do fairly well just not seeing why people stay with wages that if you broke down would make most cry.
I am not complaining about my pay its that so many settle for so little I wish they would leave the seats empty for a bit. Drivers have a very long stressful and dangerous job they deserve so much better(pay and respect) and used to get it. Now it seems they dont even respect each other. Just saying -
Oh and seats are empty I dont remember what all companies where there but just south of Columbus Oh there are there big companies lots filled to the brim with new trucks been there for several months now

The .40/mi you spoke of, that's .40/mi east of Mississippi .38 west of Mississippi, and to get east, load has to pick up, and deliver east of the Mississippi, I work for swift, and have picked up loads in Delaware, and delivered to St. Louis, and in such a case since load delivers west of the Mississippi, I get western miles, for entire load, idk maybe all the comps do this but it wouldn't be fair to claim you get payed .40/mi without showing the restrictions on it. That said I love working for swift, there my first company, and they treat me right, iv been with them for just under 2 years, and so I'm not at the rate of pay you are at, based off of exp not time with comp, my base pay rate is 32./mi/western, 34./mi/eastern, it would be helpfull to note that swift pays at a sliding scale, for me the scale is empty miles 32.mi eastern .34/mi western, ( loaded 25 miles to 99 miles .50/mi eastern .48/mi western + $25 short haul pay) ( loaded 100 miles to 149 miles .50/mi eastern, .48/mi western no short haul pay) ( loaded 150 miles to 199 miles .44/mi eastern .42/mi western no short haul pay ) ( loaded 200 miles to 249 miles .42/mi eastern .40/mi western no short haul pay ) ( loaded 250 miles to 299 .40/mi eastern .38/mi western no short haul pay ) ( loaded 300 + pays ate the base rate same as all empty miles in my case .32/mi western .34/mi eastern 5 year + exp would be .38/mi west .40/mi east, it might also be helpful to note that these are current pay rates but as of 08/01/14 swift is giving all it's otr drivers the largest pay rase it's ever given, depending on exp the rase will be from .03/mi to .05 I believe I will be the .04 range with my exp. -
And at the .04 raise your base is still not what I made at 4 months exp.. in 2002 avg'ing around 2700 miles/week.
T_TRUCKER⢠Thanks this. -
big bucks at Swift lol -
.43CPM on ALL miles, non of that sliding pay scale scam
PLUS an extra pay on Dispatched miles under
300 miles = $15
200 miles = $25
150 miles = $35
Extra stop pay is $30
The past two weeks all my loads were 1100+ each
The trucks here are cheap but the money is good.
