You can walk into the main Phoenix Swift terminal (you don't even need to be a Swift driver) at 0200 in the morning any given day of the week and it looks like a homeless mission up in there with all the drivers sleeping on the chairs as best they can in the tv room. A lot more have brought in their bedding and are lining the walls sleeping on the floors. It is embarrassing to see a multibillion dollar outfit with a bunch of drivers sleeping in chairs or on the floor. I had flashbacks to mid-80's Greyhound bus station downtown Los Angeles lol.

Yet I've been a Phoenix terminal during summer, and I've idled my truck there with no hassle.
I am not about to sleep in the drivers lounge ANYWHERE.

I think too many drivers worry about idle threats (pun intended), and if we all simply idled as we needed there would be nothing Swift could really do about it.
They can't fire us all over this issue. They don't have enough people coming in, and staying, to be able to.

They should get you a motel room if idling is so important.

    DocWatson and Moosetek13 Thank this.

If Swift wants their company drivers to idle less they need to offer an incentive, namely MONEY!

Saving money is the reason my idle percentage is commonly below 10% and frequently below 5%. In the 2 previous summers I've idled my truck all night less than 10 times (combined). I use IdleAir if it's available, stay in a motel, and/or generally try to be smart about when and when I park for the night. It probably helps that I live in Arizona and have a BIG 12 volt fan that I use in my sleeper.

The Laredo terminal manager has been sending those out to the Laredo fleet and they have been funny. Gilbert knows he's required to continually remind drivers to keep the percentage down but is understanding about the need for ac and heat. He's been using humor to get the message out. It would be nice if some grew a sense of humor.

Ok , let me get this straight .
to save money on fuel . You spent money on hotel and idle air ?
hmmmm. So how much did you really save ?

Opti idle uses about 3 to 5 gallons in 10 or so hrs.
    4.00 a gallon X 5 =$20.

Idle air last time I checked was somewhere around $25.
Hotel room cheapest I have seen was around $30. ( and no no means would I ever sleep in one of those cheap hotels ):biggrin_25512:
