I'll be getting my CDL next month and already starting to talk to companies that work with new drivers. I talked to Swift and the Recruiter told me I can expect $.28/mile for my first 4 months and 2500-3000 miles running Regional. Is it likely that I will get that many miles doing regional?

    Thanks for reading, everyone.

No. Recruiters lie for a reason.

I've seen most of the things about Swift lol. I wasn't even planning on applying with them but I went on one website and filled out an application and it sent my info out to several different companies and Swift was one that contacted me.

Swift has the freight to run you 2500+ miles/week, so no, they weren't BSing you on the miles. However, you have to work your ##### off and prove yourself to the planners. They are going to "spoon feed" you the first few (several?) weeks; 500-1000 mile trips with huge delivery windows. Get the load there quickly (no vacationing in the truck stops!), then call your driver leader for your next load. Repeat. Eventually, they'll get tired of you calling, and start sending you loads while you're still enroute to the receiver.

Oh, don't go rejecting the "crap" loads; accept everything you can legally do. That short run may be setting you up for a good follow on run.

FYI, it's difficult to actually run 3000 miles/week on a regional account. (That's part of why you get a higher per mile rate.) Since, by definition, your runs are going to be shorter, you have to be extra aware of your clock. Learn how (and when) to use the 8/2 split sleeper provision; it's saved my bacon more than once.

Thanks MsJamie! That's really good advice. I've talked to Swift, Schneider, Roehl, USA Truck, TransAm, and CRST. I'm still researching companies but it's so hard to decide on which one to go with!

Keep researching; there are dozens of companies that will hire you.
    Do you have any endorsements?

    Decker Truck Line
    Midwest-Coast Transport
    Navajo Express
    Havlor Lines
    Tyson Foods
    Howard Transportation

Plenty more that hire new CDL grads; put your location on your profile so we know the hiring area you live in.

It doesn't matter if you wow your dispatcher into a new marriage, its no different or at least any different from any other big company... Some weeks are bad some are good.... You can be the "safest" driver most "on-time" driver most "accident free" driver and working with the big dog's dont matter.... Big company do big things for there bottom line... Small company do small things for there bottom line with big things for the provider ( driver ) making them money... After working for 2 BIG companies I have found out small is the better way to go... Working small time company doesnt always give you a new truck but more than likely a dispatch that knows your names and wont have you worried about fuel millage or the BS associated with the big company

On the side note NO I have never worked for Swift nor will I ever but, look further, even with little experience, how hard up company's are now a days if you present yourself in a educated, responsible, clean person with a respected vocational interview I'm sure you could sell yourself to a better company... Think outside the box and be BIGGER than the next applicant with more experience than you....Having a personality and a manner of profession and cleanliness, could land you a job high above your standards...

    Thanks Chinatown and Halpin.
Should I be more concerned with cpm or the availability of miles? Not really sure how to decide on which companies to apply to.

    Excellent post, Halpin,
    Thank You!

I don't have my CDL yet, I finish up school next month. I do already have a TWIC card, I don't know how much weight that holds. I'm in southeastern NC, near Wilmington.
