I am finally starting training with central refrigerated (swift), on august 18 here in Fontana ca. the recruiter reviewed my app and I asked her all the question I could've of thought about. But unfortunately I forgot about the most important one, if I don't know how to drive stick shift, will they still accept me in their training program.? I already asked her about my work history and she said it was acceptable that her boss or i don't know who just had to verify it by calling them the day of orientation. My driving record is acceptable to them also. So I see no problems so far. It's already too late for me to call back and ask them about the stick shift, they're closed already.im sure some of you have went through this process before and know if the other drivers in the orientation there with you ,already knew how to drive stick shift. Did they all knew already? Some posts here say that it's BETTER NOT to know how to drive stick shift before enrolling into school?????? Because most of the people that already know how to do it, don't actually do it the right way!(double clutch is my guess, I don't know though). So for them it's already a habit to drive their car like that & it's more difficult to get used to double clutching. Is that true? If it's not, then I would have to ask a friend of mines to show me how to drive stick shift, Only if it's A MUST know for training. If I go with mycommon sense, my guess is that you don't have to know how to drive stick. That's why it's called "training ", but it doesn't hurt to ask question and be sure about it. Please help a wannabe , the more information the better. It doesn't have to be about stick shift, anything at all would help to know.
How it is?!

From what I've read here, you're actually at an advantage not knowing how to drive a stick, but I'll let the pros confirm that. Best of luck to you in your training. That's exciting.

Don't sweat it......you're in training......they don't expect you to know how to shift. There is an excellent post somewhere on TTR about the Swift Academy. It will tell you everything to expect. Do a search for it.

Not knowing how to drive a stick is probably to your advantage.Trucks shift a bit different then cars so you won't bring in any bad habits.

Only one of the guys in my class did not know how to work a manual transmission before training. It was tough on him, but he passed first try. It wouldn't hurt to get your friend to teach you the basics... just so that you can feel what the clutch does when you start from a dead stop. I have not had to double clutch in over 10 years, but it is probably good to know how to do it.

don't sweat it. you'll be fine. focus on your timing and rhythm when double clutching and you'll be doing this in no time.
be safe out there future Driver.Last edited by a moderator: May 9, 2015

It's all about getting your left foot and right arm to work together. When one moves, so does the other simultaneously. Sit in a chair with a roll of toilet paper for the clutch and practice.

Don't forget the toilet plunger for the shifter...

And while you're at it you might as well ditch the chair and sit on the toilet to complete the set.
