Another point I question. I don't believe in across the board raises. Try giving raises out based on merit. I left my last company after 5 years because I knew my merit was worth it. When I went in and asked for a 2 cent raise they told me no, the reason? If they gave it to me then they would have to give it to everyone. Really? Including the yahoo cowboy that can't leave the terminal without hitting something? When they told me no I thanked them for listening to me, got home 2 days later and faxed in my resignation. My 5 years of safe driving and on time delivery wasn't worth the 2 cents I asked for. As it turned out, I bettered myself with the new job.

Hi JohnBoy, ain't that the truth. I got that baloney from a company too, and I'm not bragging, but week after week, I'd have the best(or 2nd best) fuel mileage, one of the best oil mileages, and always came in from my runs earlier than most the other drivers, and when I asked for a raise, they said the same thing. Their pencils hit the floor when I told them I was quitting, why, they asked?:smt017

All I hope for is this, when I retire in a few years, the bottom feeders are gone, shippers and receivers are held accountable, and drivers wages are doubled. Sounds kinda like, I want to be 20lbs lighter, 20 years younger and 20% more hair on my head. Ain't happening.

I'm at this point now. I hauled dedicated OSOW (multiple loads daily) for a local company. After 7 years (no accidents, no tickets, 1 OW violation (on co.) I just found out they hired a loader/equp. operator off the street for the same pay as me (I get hourly, not mileage- multiple loading, short-ish hauls). I talked to the HR director, who came back and said the owner "feels he's paying the going market rate. If I'm not happy with that, I can look elsewhere!"
Weeeeeellllll, he's about to find out the caliber of replacement he's going to find won't match up to my caliber of work ethic, safety conscious, and care of equipment. But by then it'll be to late for him, I'll find me some greener pastures....

I hit the thank because drivers do deserve raises no doubt about that but across the board,no.I do think drivers deserve more respect and more pay when they first start. As the saying goes you get what you pay for.Bad pay is followed by bad drivers.Alot of so called professionals are just the opposite because companies make them that way.Which simply means more unwelcome visits from the DOT.

LOL If you guys don't agree that we are all getting paid less that what we should that's up to you. YAh I merit more than the average steering wheel holder too, But I get my merit raises. If everyone gets a boost that's just another boost for me too.

Swift doesn't buy insurance like the average owner operator does., they are self insured up to a point. Imagine if they had to pay premiums on every single truck and trailer plus workman's comp.

I've been more or less unemployed for 6 months.Because of the pay.I had 1 company that lasted less then 2 weeks because of the unsatisfactory pay I quit.I applied to a few companies and everyone was going to hire me except 1.I turned them all down because im worth more then what they was willing to pay.Did'nt find out till after interviews what the job and pay was like otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my time. Now im driving for a tanker company hauling asphalt that I feel is the perfect fit for me.So far im very pleased with the benefits, pay the added extras the people.I finally decided im tired of settling for second best.Newbies have a more tougher time because there is so much they don't know on how to be successful. Many don't come to forums and talk to other drivers. They learn as they go and unfortunately they learn the hard way.
