Without knowing who ask for it and all that. Sounds like a trucking company wanting to make sure you didn't have an employer in that time frame. I don't know of or ever heard that it is a federal thing. Sounds like it is just a company thing.

This is a requirement from Swift. The letters can't be from family members. Basically anyone that can vouch that you were unemployed during the time you are claiming on your application.

I always laugh at these silly company requests. Even funnier the job seekers can't bs a simple doc when asked.

If asked, I could have a notarized letter I climbed Mount Everest by end of business day Monday.

I believe that quite a few trucking companies have that requirement. I have tried getting notarized letters in the past. It is much easier said than done.

The companies want to make sure that you were NOT in prison or that you were NOT driving for another company. The government also wants to make sure that you were NOT receiving training as a terrorist in Yemen or some other far corner of the world.

Also, if you were unemployed past a certain length of time, it looks bad in the eyes of many companies, NOT just trucking companies. I personally do NOT agree with this, only because the economy has put many people out of work through NO FAULT of their own.

I unfortunately experienced this twice in my life, 1st. time for 11 months and the 2nd. time for 7 months. The longer one is out of work, the more difficult it becomes to find a job. I would NEVER wish unemployment on anybody.

Have the letter say, "(your name) was not employed in a DOT regulated industry from (start date) to (end date). That's all you have to do. No problem. Lots of people have been out of work for one year, two years or longer. A friend of mine I went to college with took two years off after his mom died and left him an amount of money, because he wanted too and life is short. After two years he wanted to get back in the workforce, went to truck driving school, passed lol, and got pre hire letters and invitations to orientations from just about every company he applied for, he went with Roehl and does the 7 on 7 off tour.

There was legislation proposed in congress to make it illegal to discriminate against people who have been unemployed, but it hasn't become law yet.

And also remember, if one company won't hire you, another one will. It's like ZZ Top says, "I got a girl who lives on the hill, if she won't do it then her sister will." That's some great advice about life in that quote, for all sorts of situations.

Why is unemployment not the persons fault? There are always people hiring. It might not be the job you want, but its better then being unemployed. I worked in the solar industry in PA/NJ. The government incentives got pulled and 600+ companies including the one i worked for went out of business over night. The economy screwed me over. I had years of training in the field. I didn't collect unemployment for 7-11 months. I went to cdl school for 3 weeks and got a trucking job in less then a month. Lossing my job was the governments fault for pulling the incentives for people to buy solar, but I never collected a dime of unemployment. I learned a whole new industry and took care of myself. Its not the governments job to bail anyone out. You can always find a job, it just might not be the one you want. I wouldn't hire someone with 11 months of unemployment. First off, they arent used to working and will probaly be slow at first. secondly, they obviously didn't do everything they could to get a job, so they prob wont go the extra mile while working for me.

i wouldn't say everyone is hiring.

7.5 million jobs disappeared when the recession hit. majority of that was construction that may never come back.

talk is, the economy is improving. but big corporations are still downsizing.

So, learn another trade and get a job. Its all ecconomics. If people loose their job, they dont have money to buy products,,,thus companies must hire US workers so US workers will have enough money to buy their products. All unemployment does is keeps these workers paid while not working. Since they can still afford products, companies can put jobs overseas and US unemployed still can afford their products. Unemployment compensation makes jobs go overseas. Even with the jobs that disapeared, there are still tons of jobs available. Retail jobs cant be shipped over seas. Transportation can't either. If everyone works for their money then unemployment tax charged to the business goes down. (more unemployment claims is higher tax rate for business) Now that business can offer higher wages to it's empoyees without costing them more. When someone takes un employment, the employees with jobs pay for it. Like I said before, I have never collected a dime and have put thousands into that system.

You can't find a job? Get a CDL, work on ships, work retail, work in a factory. Many jobs are available for those who have little or no education.
