Kc, if you don't mind working weird hours, Tyson is a awesome company to work for. I worked for them, I had personal things at home to deal with, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have ever left. I made excellent money, every week!!! I'm glad I did what I did, I love what I do now even better, but, I'm just just letting you know, Tyson wouldn't be a mistake. Good luck.

Another thing, I darn sure wouldn't make a decision on my career based on what someone on here is saying!! You have to listen to yourself, if you believe everything in here you wouldn't work anywhere, some people have no life, or must not be working enough at their own job, because they stay in here looking to complain about everything!!!! Like I said , Good Luck friend.

A first year rookie is like a 16 year old teenager.

One thing is a given about a forum like this, those that speak most loudly are usually those that are most negative. Think about that for a moment. If you are having a great experience in a company, how motivated are you to get on a forum like this to proclaim their excellence? On the other hand if you have a bad experience, then you want the whole world to know you were done wrong.

I applied at Swift AFTER being on TTR for a few months and reading all the bad mouthing. At least I had the balls to actually go visit the local terminal, along with several other terminals of prospective companies, before making my decision after checking out the situation for myself rather than believing what I read on the internet (and we all know that everything someone says on a forum has to be the straight up truth, right?). Swift was the only place I was immediately welcomed to go on up and visit the recruiter face to face, talk with some driver managers, planners, driver development, go to the driver's lounge and talk to drivers, etc. Nobody else did that, wasn't even allowed on the property at some places.

I came into Swift with my eyes wide open regarding the pay situation, knowing I'd have to earn my stripes to get back into this industry. I wasn't pissing and moaning about low pay, bad training, etc. I was here to work.

First six months solo I earned at about a $34K annualized clip, then got onto a dedicated gig that boosted that to about a $42K annualized clip. Now I've started mentoring and it's looking like somewhere north of $55K annualized.

    I came. I worked. I earned.

If the government was not as stupid as it is, it would have abolished the minimum wage years ago.

    Here's an example of reality.

Joe owns a store. The store does a sufficient level of business that Joe can keep 9 employees on payroll, 40 hours a week. His payroll (disregarding taxes and other government mandated expenses) is 9*40*8=$2880/week. His employees are happy, his customers are happy, the accountant is happy, so Joe is happy.

Now, some bureaucrat (who has never run a business, and could recognize one 3 out of 4 times) decides that all businesses MUST pay their employees a minimum of $9/hour.

Joe has a dilemma. His payroll just went up $360/week (and all those disregarded government things went up as well). Since the store can't handle the $3240/week, Joe has to reduce his payroll. He now has 8 employees, and the 9th person's income just went to $0.

The employees are not happy; their work load just went up 13%. The customers aren't happy, because they aren't getting the service that they have come to expect. The accountant is not happy, because the cost of their incoming goods has gone up to pay for their suppliers' additional payroll costs. And Joe is FAR from happy.

The problem with the government meddling with the free market is that they always screw it up. By saying that the least that you can pay is $X, the end result is that many jobs will pay AT MOST $X, as well. A security job where you sit in your car and watch a locked gate pays the same as a convenience store where you have to clean, stuff shelves, and the like. You work your butt off at one, and can barely stay awake at the other, yet both pay the same.

It's the law of unintended consequences. Raising the minimum wage has historically also raised prices (inflation) and unemployment.

PLEASE tell me you did NOT just use a US news "opinion" article to make a horribly less than intelligent statement such as "raising the minimum wage helps jobs".

Heck, if that's our logic, let's just make the minimum wage 50 dollars an hour and instantly wipe out poverty.

Increasing "costs" for business NEVER "helps" jobs. If this doesn't make sense, start your own business, it will become painfully obvious.
