What have you L/P's been told about when you are allowed to go off-duty driving?

Over the past year we have gone from "OK to do it whenever you are bobtail" to "Ok as long as you are bobtail and make a comment as to why (shopping, eating, etc)" to "ONLY if you are leaving bobtail from a Swift terminal or the motel"......this last one came from the head of safety and elogs.

From what I have been told and it has been all over the place. Can only BT if within 100 miles of your home terminal. Okay to BT is not being paid. I have been told that I can not bob tail home from the Columbus terminal, but I can if going to the T/A which is located in my town. Can not get a real answer from any one.

If it's their truck or your leased on you have to go by their rules or get fired or have your lease cancelled.

If it's your own truck and trailer and you have no load you can drive that puppy non stop 24/7 and no log book as personal conveyance.

I don't mind following their rules as long as I know them. To get in trouble for doing something that you were told you could do is what gets to me. They need to make sure that their policy is clear and that everyone knows it. I even asked the head of safety "Why do we have it if we are so restricted in how we use it?" He had no answer.

The FMCSA rules are PURPOSELY vague and Swift obviously DOES NOT like that.
I got a message on the QC a year ago telling me to "review the Swift policy concerning off-duty driving".
My attitude has always been "if it's legal" I'm gonna do it.
