at that point i would find out what you HAVE to make each week/month and see how many miles you HAVE to get and see what is possible.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but this sounds like you only want to be on the road a couple of weeks at a time at most. That will limit your income, for sure.

I'm willing to be gone 3 weeks at a time and am picking companies that have terminals or other plans to support it.

The recruiter's quote was based on a best hope, and not one that should be relied on if you want to be home more than once every 4-5 weeks - at best.

For every home time there is at least one very short pay check, maybe two.
And with financial obligations you may need to take an advance, which means yet another short week.

First year pay sucks, and even more so if you want to be routed home every couple-three weeks.

What you are 'willing' to do may not match what you 'need' to do.

You may need to adjust your attitude slightly.

You can't forget that our "slow time" will be here shortly after this person would upgrade to solo. Won't get near the weekly pay that is being talked about.

I have a few edges to get me through the slow season. One is that I am in the Guard and can do much of my military time during slow months and I would have GI benefits I can use for the 1st year. I'm looking at Swift because they have a terminal close enough to where I live so getting back every 2-3 weeks (likely 3) shouldn't be a real obstacle. Will start a new thread to ask about how long most Swift drivers stay out at a time if I don't see an answer in the forum.

I generally stay out 5 weeks then take 4 days off. Could take more time but I'd have to give up my truck, and I really like my ProStar. After 4 days I'm ready to get back out anyway.

That gives me four solid checks with hometime week about half as much. I run a steady 2800-3200 miles a week and don't take 34 resets when I'm out.

Thanks all. Got an answer from a Swift recruiter (3rd time's the charm) that they don't offer the va jot option like Schneider or Roehl. That would have been an extra 14k for the first year. Nothing against Swift but will likely pick another pasture to roam. Thanks to all for your replies and thoughts.

Three drivers in the first yr made 38k (the lazy guy) 46k (stayed solo) and myself 47k (became a trainer for the last three months of the yr. The middle guy didn't have a family at home so he stayed out and busted his butt. I busted mine too but have a family. The lazy guy has a family and will put off work if he doesn't have to do anything.
