I'm heading for the TX panhandle in the morning. Starting on US-6 a little south of Provo UT.
They have me routed on US-50 from Grand Junction to pretty much Pueblo. Looks like mostly 2-lane from Montrose to Canon City. It looks kinda sketchy to me for an 18-wheeler. Supposed to be a light load but Swifts lied before.
Ive plotted out a couple of other routes primarily over the Rockies on 70 and then on down 25 to Raton. That way is a tad longer but keeps showing as being quicker by 30-45 minutes. Personally I prefer the interstate in case of mechanical failures but I also like the great scenery of the back roads. I'm also running on recaps so I can't afford to be plodding along too much.
So the question is, for those that have driven 50, which is better or safer...US-50?..or taking 70 and 25 to Raton??
Thanks!!

50 hands down winner
cowboy_tech and HousTank Thank this. -
What are you hauling? Sometimes the freight dictates what routes to take, potato chips for example.

If I remember correctly 50 is pretty curvy at times across the Rockies. Regardless of the weight of the load there are several 35 mph curves that will slow you down and very few places to stop in case of emergency. I may be mistaking it with another highway but I'm pretty sure that's the route I took last winter with a 44k load and it was not exactly a cake walk.
It is certainly a much prettier drive though. Once you get east of pueblo though 50 is a pretty good little highway to travel. A few small towns to slow down for but for the most part it is 65mph and truck friendly.HousTank Thanks this. -
Thanks Broccelli..I'll be taking I25 south out of Pueblo to get US-64 after Raton to get into TX.
I figured it would be a scenic drive. I'm concerned over how long it will take to get to Pueblo. I'm running on recaps and don't want to get hung up behind sightseers and what not. Thanks! -

my question was regarding US-50. I've been on 70 plenty.
Thank you for your input as it was very helpful -
50 sucks. very time consuming. find another route.
lotsa curves and hillsHousTank Thanks this. -
"Running on recaps"... doesn't mean much, if anything.
There ought to be a law requiring guys needing quick routing answers to quickly type the cities/states of origin and destination... but at least you didn't ask for the best route between UT and TX.HousTank Thanks this.
