My husband and his buddy both started at swift back in july
His buddy decided to go the lease route recently. Drove 3200 miles last week and got a settlement of -135.00, and he is still in the grace period for truck payments His belief is it is because he is fueling too often, i don't see how that would make a difference, but i don't know much about the business, so would it? Sorry, i have no other details to offer, just hate to see him fail and was wondering what advice could be offered.

Those leases are designed to make the trucking co. money, not the driver!!
pattyj Thanks this. -
Must be some of the best sales people in the business considering how many sign up for the lease programs?
"semi" retired Thanks this. -
your not going to succeed when being payed 95 cents a mile.

Very few actually succeed leasing, his buddy will have many more negative checks.Wish folks would do the math before doing the lease program.

And the trolls surface. I would ask 2 questions. When did he sign the contract. If it was before the end of the pay period like on a Monday then he would be charged the other expenses for the remainder of the week. Also if he is delivering a load lets say on a Weds and on Tuesday he is only about 100 miles away and needs fuel and fills up, then all of the extra fuel will also be deducted on that weeks pay. As far as fueling, never fill up at the end of the week unless he is picking up a load on Tuesday or maybe Monday but will not deliver until Thursday. Hope that this helps some. Please do not listen to the trolls. I have been here now almost 4 years and of that been a lease/op for almost 3 years and 9 months. At the first of April my lease is up. The only times that I have had a negative check was when it was my fault. But I also place .15/mi into my escrow account so I can take that out and take away the negative.

OK, now that the troll have spoken I'll offer some advise.
As a lease operator (happy now trolls?) you need to watch fuel purchases VERY CAREFULLY!
Fuel purchases "follow the load". NEVER fill the truck unless you are 99% certain to burn the fuel either on the load you're on or before the end of the pay week.
Example: It's Wednesday (start of the pay week) and you snag a nice 2,000 mile load that delivers on Monday. FILL THE TRUCK. Then on Sunday you get planned on a 500 mile load that you pick up on Mon and deliver on Tuesday. Only put enough fuel in the truck to make your delivery on Tuesday and make it to your next fuel stop.
Why you ask?? Because if you fill the truck (again) just before the 500 mile load and your next load doesn't deliver until Thursday you will have over spent on the first week.
Another mistake (has bitten me) is fueling on one week (thinking it will follow the load into the next week) only to find out you WERE NOT dispatched (such as looking for an MT trailer) and got charged on the previous week.
ALSO, it's VERY IMPORTANT (to your bottom line) where you fuel.
Example: Fuel is currently $3.06 at the Phoenix terminal yet I can pay $2.60 at an independent 30 miles west of the terminal. Since the load I'm planned on for Sunday goes west to Calif WHY would I even consider buying fuel at the terminal? If I buy 100 gallons (what I need to get comfortably to my delivery in Shafter, CA) I will save $46.00 on a single fuel purchase.
I hope this helps. -
Probably bought too much fuel against the 3200 miles that he will be paid for. Figure 7 miles per gallon (I go 6 mpgs so there is leftover fuel against my paid miles for the week) divided into 3200 = 457 gallons. Chances are he filled his tanks after his last load which will be deducted against the next settlement. Probably where he should have limited his fuel for the week to about $1500 he probably spent about a thousand more than that. There are other deductions for the first 6 months of the lease. The good news is next week's settlement should be pretty big because he won't have to purchase as much fuel against his settlement.
