That's so true. In the school I went to, perfect attendance rewarded you with an laminated atlas. Needless to say, I didn't get that award.

I do recommend an atlas. I've become way too dependent on my GPS and it can get you in trouble. Google maps is a good substitute if you have internet access, but that isn't consistent. This just reminded me to buy another atlas.

Do not know about for your school but we had one in school. And you absolutely need it afterwards, even though we have these gps devices now it will contain a lot of information that the gps doesn't. Like others said, get the laminated edition with spirals it seems to hold up and last longer than the others.

I know this is thinking pretty far ahead...but what about buying a GPS unit too...I've seen pretty cheap Rand McNally Units on ebay...$100, etc for a truck unit...

Don't worry about that yet. Learn that atlas first. Too many guys use the GPS as the be all end all and are screwed when they need to think for themselves.

I've made a few cross-country trips among other things...so an atlas isn't completely foreign to me LOL :)

I've met guys out here who wouldn't know the first thing about reading an atlas, lol. I've had discussions here telling me I'm a dinosaur for pushing the use of the atlas too...,,

To be honest, I'm only in my 30's and only mentioned picking-up a gps unit...because that would be more foreign to me LOL :)

Ask your school, your going to need one at some point either way, even assuming you'll have a GPS, but my school wanted us to have one for going over trip planning.
