Son drives for Swift. Left on a run from Greer to Pennsylvania. Last night about midnight he pulled out of a truckstop on I77 after 30 minute break, and just 30 miles from.his exit to.I81, truck started to loose power, would not accelerate, was making noise when depressing clutch, and then.started to overheat. Pulled over, called roadservice, who towed his trk and trailer into.a secured yard. Unable to.fix at this location, so they told him.it will be going to.a dealer in Greenville. Will they send him another truck, or put him on a bus back to.home terminal? He normally pulls a flatbed, but took this dryvan after they asked him to, so his tractor is setup for flat bed use. What does Swift.do when this happens? Its doubtfull this truck will be back in service until late this coming week if he is lucky, but as of yet it really has not been looked at. This was his first run with.this tractor.

My hubby spent a week in Wisconsin while his truck was worked on. They supposedly reimburse the motel cost, we have yet to see that. $50/day breakdown pay.
-
When they gave him this truck for flatbed, after attending classes on flatbedding,.they told him not to get too.comfy with it, as in 3 to 6 weeks he should be getting a new one. Don't know if the meant new to.him or as in 2016 model. After this run, he was supposed to,start a triangle run of Laredo, Gary Indiana and.some other place which will be his regularly assigned run.

They might be able to take care of him then. I think a lot of it has to do with the fleet leader, personally. Hubby has only been driving 6 months though. I'm sure some of the more seasoned drivers will chime in.

I've had two "horses" die under me during my tenure with Swift. If the problem can be fixed within a few days, then Swift will put him up in a hotel and wait for his truck to be repaired and he will get $50 a day. If the problem will take longer than a few days his DM will get involved and try to locate a truck for him to recover or get a new truck assignment.
A "recovery truck" means he will be getting a truck that a driver has abandoned that hasn't had a shop review, an assigned truck means he will be getting a truck at a terminal that has had a shop review. Either way he will be given a bus ticket to get the new truck, then be given a dispatch to drive bobtail back to his original truck so he can get his personal effects. Once he's in the new truck and assigned to drive bobtail he's back on normal pay per mile. In rare cases he might be given a one way rental car to go pick up a new truck, so he can unload personal effects from the truck in the shop.
If this just happened, on a weekend, then on Monday morning he should contact his DM right away to start pushing to get a new truck assignment or recover an abandoned truck. Weekend or night staff can't seem to make those kind of decisions, it's on his DM to take care of it.
One thing about recovering an abandoned truck, since it hasn't had a shop inspection it is likely there will be "issues" with it. The previous driver may not have been particularly clean. Both times I had a breakdown I've been given abandoned trucks, and both times it took a fair amount of work to get them ready to my liking for living on the road and both times they had mechanical issues that ultimately made me turn them in at a terminal to get assigned a new truck. -
When i was given mine i had already hit 17000 miles in the first 6 weeks of the new year. -
New trucks as a priority are normally assigned to teams and mentors. After one year they are assigned another new truck and the now one year old truck is assigned to a solo driver (after 180K to 250K miles on it). Some solo drivers will be assigned new trucks, usually on seniority and ranking (I believe platinum and above). I've heard of newer drivers getting a new truck, but that is more likely the luck of not having any older trucks available to assign in a given location.
