Otherhalftw, I started that first contact with Tim in Sumner. On my second contact I was informed that he had been transferred to a new department. Now last I heard they did not place a new recruiter in Sumner, and all applications go to Phoenix.
If I knew this from the start, I would have called the Lewiston recruiter where I was going to go to school.

Nice to hear from you. You give a lot of good info, not the usual bad stuff. mtl2020 is from utica, ny and he posted earlier on this thread that he had a recruiter from phoenix. i think it is just the luck of the draw when you fill out an app on line. I got the name of the recruiter from syracuse and I am going to call him the first of next week. The northeast shows 2 comfort zones, one is the northeast regional and the other looks like east of the mississippi. the only dedicated they showed for my area is stanley door(min 3 mos) or staples (min 12 mos)

I do not know how the academy in Texas is run. This Lewiston academy and the academy in Phoenix are different. Here are some examples. In Lewiston we do not pay the $150 sitting fee, but in Phoenix they do pay a $150 sitting fee.
In Lewiston we needed to arrive with our cdl permit and we needed to pay for ALL of the licensing fees on our own. My license costs are listed below:

$10 general knowlege test.
$10 air brakes and combination test.
$10 to have my issue attached to my license. (No temporary, paper license allowed.
$100 skills testing fee.
After I pass the skills and driving tests, I will pay another $10 to have my final CDL issued.

Now regarding the pay and timing of it. Again I can only tell you what I know from my experience. First of all, I started the recruiting process on May 18. My first class date was June 1st, but this got postponed because the recruiter screwed up a form in my file and I got removed from the class list. My actual school start date was June 29th. When I graduate from the academy with my original class it will be July 17th. This day is simply 18 days of class from the start date, with one day off in there.
Now, when I graduate on July 17th, I will not be able to start the 3 day orientation at my home terminal until July 28th. This is different depending on which terminal you are assigned. So if I complete the orientation on time, even if I get on with a mentor immediately, I will not see my first check till at least August 5th. If I need to wait for a mentor, my first check will be one week after my first day on the mentors truck.

In Lewiston the school did buy lunch on day 1. After day 1, all food is our responsibility. The motel that we are in does supply some waffles and sticky buns for breakfast, but lunch and dinner are on you. We went to the grocery store and picked up some supplies to keep in our room as well as lunch stuff.

You need to have money to survive on when you are in school. I had an adequate amount of money to live before my recruiter postsponed school by a month. Now I am living on pb&j and macaroni and cheese just so I can have a few dollars for an emergency.
For all of you wondering about the paycheck on the Mentor's truck:

Your first check will be for the amount of days (active days according to the Quallcom status report required everyday..kind of like a time clock) you are on the truck at the end of the pay period. If I remember right (could be wrong on this but..) pay period is Monday thru Sunday..it could have changed. Remember I was O/O for the last four years and the O/O pay period is a slight bit different than the company side...i digress!

Student pay is not a weekly salary, it is based on a per day basis (flat amount per day) so your first check will be determined by which day of the week you get started with your Mentor, and by how many days you work in the first week. The first check is usually very short, since you will spend three days in orientation (unpaid which I TOTALLY disagree with) then hopefully there will be a Mentor for you chomping at the bit to get you on his truck. Remember it is YOUR responsibility to do your daily check in on the Quallcom, don't be lazy do your daily business..also it used to be the student was required to check in with Driver Services on at least a weekly basis (again Quallcom) do your duty people, as they say check all the boxes and dot and cross those "T's".

For you guys going to the Lewiston academy...that is the academy that wrote the book for the Swift system...they were always the BEST in curriculum, staff, and performance standards. It could be said they are an "ANAL" bunch...but that is a good thing when you think about it, better to be overdone, than a rare duck I guess.

Good luck to all of you in the acadamies!

I know this is the right place for me at this point in time, and if Swift and I can work well for each other I would be happy to stay on with them. As for now, I just need to complete the training, get hired, pay off my schooling, and make some money for the both of us.
Amen to that!

Tim Hutson..you can get the Sumner Terminal number by calling the Phoenix terminal main number 800-800-2200, and asking the operator for the Sumner number, call Sumner and ask for Tim, tell him your situation and see if he can ramp things up for you. It doesn't hurt to ask!

I am headed north tonight with a load to Kent, WA...if you want, would be nice to put a face with the post, if you have questions we could have a cup of coffee on my way thru Salem. I will take my ten at Roseburg Love's, then continue on Sunday noonish. There is plenty of parking at the Salem K-Mart...you know the one with the Adult book store and charles Schwabb tire facility...what a way to describe a location...and the airport is across the street. but I will check this thread Sat night/Sun morn before I leave to check on your response if any.
I know Troutdale is the closest one... Cindy had told me that after the schooling when I get to the Orientation stage it will be at Sumner... So far I don't have a situation that would Warrent to give Tim a call directly as of yet since I technically still have to wait till Monday to let them know I have my Permit now anyways but I'll definatly add the number to my list of Swift contacts LOL...

I know exactly where that K-mart is and there is the cool Coffee in Motion coffee shop right there as well... and I am always up for a cup of coffee.. I know it'd take a bout 5-10 min to get from home to there so if ya wanna give me a shout when ya are in the area that'd be cool...

Said what? What ol' Nana wrote?? (don't forget, spoiling is her game).
Just remember if your thoughts and sentiments don't "ring true" with what a couple others have to say here, it's "negative" and incorrect. (Even though both don't hesitate to tout their allegience to the constitution). Don't get me wrong...I don't discount the value and meaning of the document, I'm just not a hypocrite of it.

Windy, you are quite the spoiled little boy aren't you. Nana reminded someone of the rules of this forum, not to post phone numbers, the other probably got a polite nastygram from a mod at some time for doing just the same thing..posting a phone number.

Your thoughts about certain things you have posted are your issues with Swift and you..yet you continue to fault anyone who disagrees with you. You have not been disallowed your right to speak your mind, some, like me disagree with what you say...freedom of speech goes for both sides of the street..pro and con of any subject. However it does not allow personal indictments of another person, or the words of another person, unless the words are threatening, libelous, or blatantly false and demeaning.

You are doing your best to turn this thread, a thread that many read to find out what happens, on a daily, as it occurs documentation of the activities at a Swift academy. Nana tried to do the same thing, and there were a couple who did exactly what you are doing to this thread. Trying to pick a fight and get the thread closed by a moderator due to the bickering back and forth.

Please stop your anti-Swift tirade and allow Ford to post what he started. Allow him to finish his academy and document what happens during his time. There are threads for those who have a dislike for Swift. Post all your attacks on Swift, their academies, and the Swift personell to the sections that are purposed for the bad of companies. Let Fords thread continue without disparaging sentiments from you or others that have a bad taste for Swift.

The latest attempt to turn this thread from what it is, is turning to political twists and turns. there are threads for politics also...move over there and start your own thread and have a good time getting jumped on by anyone who opposes your viewpoint there...but be careful, they don't just use inuendo and second hand information..they research, back their posts with links, actual active links that support their side, and also have links that go against what they beleive and refute the claims...so have fun spinning over on the threads designed for your spin and outrage.

Thank you for showing Ford a little respect, and the others who are using this thread for its intended purpose!
