tanker in south florida area

good luck my friend, i have a friend who works for Kenan, Gas Haulers in that area, and he told me they changed the requirements to 5 years....

 

i talked with kenan in ft. lauderdale about 8 months ago, they were slow not hiring. dispatcher said at the time "everybody is slow". i would say anyone planning on coming to south florida now, be financially prepared to not being able to secure a cdl job very quickly. i don't think there is a shortage of qualified fuel drivers down here.

A gasoline company is going to hire a driver with gasoline tanker experience first then, a tanker driver, then an OTR driver, local driver (may hire before an OTR all depends on what kind of local driving and what the company does), and last a new driver. Most all require at least 2 years experience but there are some that will take new drivers. Those are the ones that no one wants to drive for. Of course it all depends on your past record and if you have any tickets and such.

I've seen a few drivers start out at the companies no one wants to work for and build their name there. They stay there for two years and then go for the good jobs. By that time they know who to go to and who to talk to. But they only make it if they stay clean.

 

might be able to get lucky with Florida Rock and Tank Lines. They have terminals all over Florida and the deep south. They might take 1 year of experience with Tanker and Hazmat. Depends on the terminal I'm told.

You might be able to get on with a better outfit if you tried though...

 

do you know of anyone looking for a 40 yr with 20 yrs exp. Hauling and mixing fuel in south florida. Relocating to fort myers and he loves driving a tanker.

 

Once upon a time I lived in Florida but with your experience and IF your record is clean I would think you'd be pushed to the head of the line. I do know however that FL pay was low for fuel haulers way back when but I have heard it's the same way today. BTW, I drove out of Jacksonville. I started at 12½¢ per mile with no benefits. I took a road test with PLOOF trucking and they wanted to pay me $4 an hour part time. When I went to start the truck the driver trainer told me to use the preheater to start the truck. That's when I said no thanks. It was in the middle of summer and very hot out.

How do you get gasoline tanker experience if no one will you give you a chance? I`m finishing school soon and i was planing on putting my application in about 5 companies. I was going to try gas hauling instead of otr, i`m depressed now.

 

Well, I figure you do have to have a little luck. But my advice would be to put in applications. It's the only way to get a position. Try all the LNG straight truck companies in your area. Try the 3rd party fuel companies in your area (that deliver with straight trucks). There should be many.
