Trying to find a fuel tanker job that military exuberance will be excepted

my name is Michael Legge, and I am currently serving in the United States Marine Corp. I will be exiting the service this September October time frame. I am trying to find something for when I get out of the military. That would except my military experance as on the road time. I am a Simi-Refuelr by trade, and I have been hauling both jet fuel and regular fuel since june 13th 2009 .I have also driving in Okinawa Japan, Afganastin, and North Carolina. The state of North Carolina waves my skills test due to my military experance so as soon as I take the writen test I will have my tanker, and hazmat endorcments. I am interested in working out of the Wilmington N.C terminal. due to that is where I am currently living. Does anyone know who would except this exuberance, and who would hire a very motivated 22 year old that is well mannered and disciplined. please help me.

Sorry to say but most will not. They will not take your driving in the military as experience that they require. They do like the part where you handled fuel however. I was in the same boat when I got out. They didn't care about my military driving but they like the fact that I hauled explosives and nuke weapons.

What I would do if I were you is go to the terminal and talk with them. That way you have the chance to explain what you did and how close your experience might be to their's. Try to find a truck dropping at a station and carefully walk up to him or her and ask where you can go to talk with the companies. Just about all the companies will say they want drivers with 2 years experience and 23 to 25 years of age. But you do have a slight advantage now because you are in the service. If you could wear your uniform in that would be a plus. Not your dress uniform but what you wear everyday. Good luck and you'd be surprised to know there's a lot of us vets here on the group. I'm retired Equipment Operator US Navy Seabee.

Marines arent allowed to wear their daily uniforms off base, unless you're in transit to and from work. stop to get gas in town, and you'll get yelled at by someone of higher rank.Haha.

And semper yutt yutt but you only have a slight advantage due to being in the military. But depending on how you present yourself and your experience, it might go a long way. all in the presentation. And you'd be surprised, alot of hiring managers these days are ex marines. I went for a second job and found out the guy was a reservist 1st Sgt, he's like here go to this drug test. haha

As has been pointed out, your age does limit what some companies will be willing to offer.

What you have been doing in the Corps most closely matches "Refuelers" at airports. I doubt that there is much money in the Wilmington area, as far as refueling airplanes goes.

I haven't been to the Wilmington area in a little over 2 years, so I forget the various names of the gas transport companies based there. Two to talk with, because of your military experience and your desire to work in that area, would be Eagle Transport and Wilco Hess. Wilco Hess may have farmed out their work by now, but I am not certain. A third to talk with would be Keenan.

I say those 3 because back in 06 all three signed on for providing job placement for exiting military personnel. Something that will help you would be a letter of recommendation from a ranking officer in your unit. Captain or higher.

If you are thinking about going OTR hauling bulk chemicals, then the picture changes dramatically as to which companies to talk with. One company with a terminal in Wilmington, whom will take your military work into consideration is Sentinel Transportation. Another company to talk with is in Sumter. FCI (Freehold Cartage Inc). FCI is a waste hauler. Their Sumter terminal is primarily a Hazardous Waste transportation facility, with the trucks serving most of the eastern and central US. Of these two companies, Sentinel provides the best benefits and the best home time (Just about every weekend).

The site doesn't allow links so you need to goggle these companies yourself. Remember. Knocking on the door "In person" usually goes a lot further in a job search than sending emails or making phone calls.

the most you will see coming out of the military is what the state is willing to do for you for your license.

Most companies have policy in place that you will have to still go to their training mandated by FMCSA.

If it were me I would find a pipeline and apply at it. To work for them instead of hauling. I have friends that work at the rack. They watch us fuel the tanks to transport jet fuel to Whiteman's Airbase in the Missouri area, and they make the huge bucks and you get first dibs on all jobs, because you're military. Look up Conoco Phillips, Magellan pipeline. You would get 401 K and profit sharing from the oil industry.
