Well,I've never hauled milk before, just perishables, and that was in Germany. It was stressful at times but it was do-able. But anyone know what the pay looks like? Do they pay over time?

I know no milk hauling company that pays overtime. As matter of fact, there are not too many trucking companies that does it. Most of the trucking companies that might pay overtime are union.

But when it comes to hauling milk, you are talking about another world.

Here in Virginia, most of the milk hauling outfits pay by the trip. A good example, a trip from Harrisonburg, Va. to Richmond, Va $80.00 250 miles roundtrip, so you are looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 30cpm. Little on the low side, AIN'T IT??????

Now, I know absolute diddly squat about milk hauling,so excuse me for the "dumb" questions. 0.30 cpm does seem low! Why would anyone do it then? Their turnover must be awful! I wish I knew someone in this branch! I think I read somewhere that Southeast Milk was at $15.00 n hour, then they dropped it to $13! WTH!? To be honest, the more threads I read, the more I am convinced I should go back to painting. The trucking business is really a cutthroat industry!!

To comment on your last statement first, yes trucking is "a cuthroat industry". Wages have been stagnant for some 35 years. Unless you drive for a LTL carrier, you are making what drivers were making in 1975. 30cpm is low and you ask "why anyone do it", well the main draw for most milk haulers(not all) is that once you are empty, you deadhead back to the house. You don't call in and wait for a backhaul. Unless you are taking the required breaks or waiting to be unloaded, the wheels are turning. For the most part, most of the milk hauling companies are small outfits, there are exceptions like Indian River and if you drive for a company like Indian River, kiss your family bye bye. You ain't coming home for sometime. But the small outfits, most likely you are home every day. Most of the milk haulers that I know will make between 40,000 and 50,000 per year, all depends how much your work.

I like milk hauling. I like the people that I come in contact with. It is a different world than hauling freight. I have been treated like crap hauling freight. Most of the time, you are treated pretty good hauling milk. About 75 % of the dairies that you deliver to have "break rooms' that drivers can use. Free coffee, milk and juice. Secure parking and I have never been turned away because I was early, go in and sleep until your time. You take last week, I took a load of cream to Fraser, NY to Morningstar Foods, appointment was 3 am, got there @ 9pm, man said back it in. But then on the other hand, I have sit at Morningstar plant in Murray, Ky for 33 hours before.

Overall, when you count your hours against your pay, most of the time you will be making between 8 to 12 dollars per hour and that includes all the hours that you are gone from home.
