Mixer Drivers

most states have laws against this.. The worst that they can say if asked about you is ohh he's Ok.. If they bad mouth you.. Contact a labor law attorney.. Like I said most states you can sue them for slander.. The only thing bad that they can say is when asked if they would rehire.. They can answer no..and that's it. They can't black list you, bad mouth you or anything..

 

I operated/drove an 8 1/2 yd mixer, Kenworth T800 power unit, for a stint down in Louisiana. Had an opportunity recently to go back to driving a mixer in IL, but although the money paid higher than tractor-trailer jobs, I hated the thought of loosing my Class A experience/status, should a better T/T job come down the pipeline later (if I took the mixer job). Not sure whether to kick myself or not for passing it up.
One thing is for sure, pay is crap for a mixer driver in the south, as compared to the north or some other areas.

BTW,, I've been in the concrete field for about 30 years, up until 5 yrs ago, from grunt laborer, foreman, estimator/project manager, to 10 years in the very technical end, dealing with concrete materials analysis/evaluation, QC, stress/strain instrumentation, mix design, etc, etc.

You got that right. When I lived in Georgia mixer drivers were looking at pay in the low teens. Here around St. Louis they're getting close to $30 with free benefits and a pension, still seasonal, though.

 

I just found this post and was never able to find anything on here about driving a mixer. I was over the road with pride transport and hated OTR. I took my home-time and immediately found a job working for a ready mix company in the Truckee/ Tahoe/ Donner Summit area. I love my job. The pay is great. I only work 7 months of the year, home every night and still make about what I was making before. Big diff. going from a 2012 Cascadia to an 89 Mack with no radio or a/c. I have gotten to do some of the coolest jobs, this summer we had a few jobs at the ski resorts where they were installing new lifts. We drove way up on the mountain and then filled buckets hanging below a hovering helicopter. I have helped pour foundations for many celebrities and super rich. I helped deliver concrete to homes for Jennifer Anniston, John Ellway, the head of Vivid and countless others. The coolest house I have worked on was a huge compound on Lake Tahoes north shore in Incline Village, NV. Very tight security, 24/7 armed guards that is a security company that closely works with the CIA. I had to sign a bunch of stuff and not reveal who's house we were working on so I won't name names but you can research for yourself if you need to know who the CEO of Oracle is. I guess I might just be lucky to be able to help work on these huge projects.

 

Grew up around them, work around them now....still don't drive them. Opted for transfers instead. The thought of never leaving the 50 mile radius and always going back to the yard from every job sounded mundane. We have a good crew of drivers though, one has been with us 20 years. The trucks are Peterbilt 357 and 357, Cummins ISL motors....the old trucks have the 8LL tranny and the latest ones (2005 and up) are all Allison automatics.

 

I am afraid to ask, but what kind of women do you plan on picking up in a dump truck?

 

When you say a mixer driver, what kind of job is that?
