Very true, once you get used to having surge, it will make a total stud shifter out of you, and a really smooth brake user.... However, I still keep a healthy respect for surge... I've known too many very good drivers experienced with it have bad things happen... Even a couple no longer with us.

Blow a steer tire in any truck and you have trouble. And no I have never seen surge blow a tire. Also, dude, I am no rookie here, I deal with the minor annoyance of surge daily. I dont think it is going to kill me and I dont drive afraid of it or anything else. Its just a part of the job. But I hear so many people tell these new guys how "dangerous" surge is and how it will "push you through the intersection" and all that garbage. It wont, it doesnt and its no big deal. It is annoying and sure it pushes you forward on hills and pulls you back but to say it is this big bad beast that will kill you is a bit much.

You are a fool, didn't say surge will blow a steer... said if you blow a steer, you are in a lot more trouble than others without surge. As I said, even seen surge roll a guy blowing a super single trailer tire around a curve. He didn't make it either. It's only a matter of time and something WILL happen... Surge on winter icy roads where I haul, is absolutely DEADLY. And your completely clueless to say anything different.

RevKev, I saw somewhere that Sunoco pays $.50/mile and $.23 to $.25/barrel hauled. Can you share with us how many loads you've done each day so far and how many miles you've driven each day, or is that too personal a question regarding income? Also, have they shared with you how many miles their drivers can expect on average each month?

    Thanks

You actually saw a guy roll over after he blew a trailer tire? Wow, and you are sure surge caused that? You sure you didn't hear that from a guy who heard it from a guy? Cause that sounds like one of those stories I hear in the lounge.
You are a fool, I didn't say surge caused a steer to blow, I asked if you ever saw it and you haven't. But please keep the trucker tales coming, I don't drive for a living or anything, you can fool me.

ethos is not a fool! I know little about surge yet but I've spent hours talking with him. He knows what he's doing hauling hazmat bulk! When you FEAR something, you respond to it differently than you should. When you respect something that others see as fearful, you respond to it more soundly than those who fear it do.

No, I was on the scene and saw the aftermath. surge and the super single blowing out caused the trailer to creep off the road on the curve and hit gravel, the trailer obviously kept going after liquid surged again to the back of the tank, with likely side to side surge as well, pull the trailer farther off the road down into the ditch... then causing the truck to be pulled in as well... Then, Rolling. Driver didn't survive.

Doesn't sound like he respects it to me. Surge is just an "annoyance". BTW: I also have a lot of experience hauling HazMat smooth bore too. Again, surge is something to be well respected and never trifled with, and throw in a little ice on the roads... It's down right deadly... Been there, done it.

    I'll just leave this here.

Obviously most rollovers involve excessive speed and/or running off the road and overcorrecting, but you must admit liquid movement makes these situations drastically more dangerous than with stationary cargo.

To downplay the potential danger of a load that is constantly in motion is asking for trouble. I'm not saying one needs to be terrified of it, but you've got to have a ton of respect for what it can do.

And I do know a driver who turned one over making a left turn from a dead stop. He was on a hill and the product moved just the right way at the right time to flop it on its side.
