Most of the tanker companies are like this as i have researched getting into this myself. these are all good replies. it is insurance reasons, and all that. i hauled fuel for seven years when i was in the military during my 20 year service. I have seen on their sites, Quality Carriers and Groendyke will take new drivers if they have a truck school under their belt for former military. That is what helped me get looked at, as I am trying to get started with Groendyke right now.

I am new to this as well, only driving tractor trailer in the army, but still, it is a whole different animal to pull bulk liquids that slosh around even in a baffled tank than it is to haul stuff that is secured on a flatbed or in a van. it is very important to get the needed training to hook up hoses, what valves to open and close, placards etc.. you will need to do this job. as stated before a spill is very costly and dangerous when it comes to hazardous materials that are often tanked.

Indian River will hire you with no tanker experience. They have no pumps or hoses. You just load and go. Not a bad gig, worked out of the Turlock, CA terminal for 7 months, thinking about going back.:Tank-wagon:

Quality Carriers does not hire students, Yet, they have lowered their requirements down to 1 yr. But must have a excellent mvr and background.
At least that's how the terminal I'll at works. But then again all hire's must be approved by the Tampa office

Just to clarify off of your statement and so you know: I spoke to Dana Coleman at the Tampa office and he said that it is 1 year of experience, including hazardous materials. He heavily emphasized the hazardous materials part. I mean, who wouldn't? I wouldn't wanna work for a company that didn't emphasize hazardous materials (if they transport them, especially frequently). So....you are right. Just thought I'd let you know so you can be sure when you tell people!

A year and 4 months. I've set myself up with a small chemical tanking outfit with 7 trucks. They are looking to hire me in May if I make the cut. 60-65 a year top driver makes 75. Superior won't touch me QC offered me a job. I'm ready to come home tho I'm 26, 4 year old son at home and no social life. I wouldn't say the road isn't for me but before I got my cdl my goal was to get into holland co out of adams ma. Almost there I'm praying it works out.
