Hello all! I need some advice from all you tanker yankers out there!

First off Ill give my background. I am an 8 year Army Veteran with 30% disability. I live in IL but hoping to move down to TX. I have a little over 4 years exp. pulling flatbed, mostly hauling giant slabs of stone regionally for a company out of STL. I have 5 small children living at home. I was terminated form my last job for not turning in 15 days worth of DOT logs in 3 years. At the same time I filed a Workers Comp claim. I was never written up for this before so it was a shock to me when I got the ax the day before my surgery, 02/07/2014. Im sure the WC case had something to do with my firing and I'm waiting on my DAC report to find out what the company has put down.

On to my question. I'm looking at getting out of the flatbed industry and into pulling tanks. What companies should I be looking at? Should I get my HAZMAT, TWIC before applying for a position? I have my tank endorsement and passport already. Is there any companies that will hire me without them and hire me on a contingency basis of acquiring them? Ill have to wait until I'm all healed up which is 4-6 weeks to start working again so I have time to get the necessary endorsements.

I have a few companies in mind, i.e. Superior, Miller, QC. Like I stated before I would like to move the family down to the Great State of Texas eventually. How hard is it to transfer terminals once in?

I know I'm forgetting a couple of questions so feel free to ask me. ANY help will be grateful.

def get the X endorsement for Haz-Mat and tanker combo.

look for a company with a terminal near where you will be relocating.

makes it easier for home time.

At Superior, drivers sometimes get transferred, but I don't know what all is involved in making it happen. I'd imagine it would depend on driver need. You will definitely need your hazmat end before applying. TWIC can wait until after you're hired. Passport is a definite plus.

Thank you guys for replying. I'll just have to talk to a recruiter and see what my options are.

This all depends on what your injury was. If it's on your back you'll have a very hard time landing a job, if they find out. And most likely they will. You've got to protect yourself and demonstrate to them you'll be an asset to the company. Get the X endorsement and forget about talking to a recruiter at this time. That's my opinion anyway. I would look on the computer and find a company that looks good and keep a list. I see just by this site alone that tankers are wide open in TX because of all the oil fields. That will help you.

You can do just about the same thing the recruiter will do except when you do it you'll have your own goals and interest at hand. What I would do if I could not get to the area is first search out the companies you like after you've researched them from any means you find. You're going to have a battle any way you look at it because the company fired you. That will raise a red flag right there. Put them in a priority order then call them. Most will say fill out an application on-line and that's fine. Maybe you might be talking with the person that will have a say in the hiring process and you might get lucky and they can remember your call and place you to the application. So a personal contact with a company might just help you. It sure can't hurt you. Because where you stand now if you were to hold up two applications side by side a clean driver would win. I know I would not want my future to be dependent on a piece of paper. If that doesn't work then you can flood the companies with your on-line applications. If all fails that's the time you might need a recruiter. Even since they do have their own interest in mind they do know people (hopefully) and can help. But use them after all else has failed because they will direct you to any company they can. And that company may not be the best for you. So good luck.

im also in the process of getting my first CDL I just paid for my hazmat fingerprints application and applied for the X endorsement. im looking to work with Schneider to get my first OTR Tankers experience. my instructor from my current CDL school told me how Schneider tanker division are with orientation. he told me theyll have about 30 drivers in the classroom and will only keep about 7 out of that 30. Since he told me this im keeping in mind to look for a different tanker/hazmat company I can get experience with. I just pass my roadtest for my class A 2 weeks ago and passenger endorsement last Wednesday for the bus.
