Its pretty busy all round the bay but from what I can see rates are worse than ever!
We have a couple of long term jobs running that we were lucky enough to secure but the spot market for end dumps has been dead for the last 6 months. We have been busier than ever with flatbed freight and equipment moving regional and OTR but this summer looks like it will be pretty promising on construction work.
We will not drop our rates due to time of year. I hear most folks saying there are too many end & bottom dumps in the Bay Area but I think the problem is there are too many that are willing to work cheap!
Honestly I can't wait till CARB strictly enforce their rules so it will separate the people that do this for a living from the people that do this for a hobby! That way if you want to be in this business it will be a long term commitment with the appropriate equipment and you will need to charge accordingly.
The valley seems to be as promising as the bay this year, how are you finding rates out there?

    Mr&MrsPete Thanks this.

Amen Foxcover! I bought a new truck to be CARB compliant hoping the rates would go up accordingly. However, they did not. I see a lot of non-Carb compliant trucks running around pulling lowsides. I guess CARB gave another grace period until July 1st and if you have a '95 or older motor you are actually good until 2015. I bought a truck to be in business to have a business not just a job. I think that is probably the biggest problem with the trucking business as a whole. Businesses trying to compete with people who just want a job. Anyway I guess I will keep my end dump parked for now and keep pulling my lowbed around. End dump rates need to be at or near $100 hr for me to wanna pull it. I think that is a fair rate. Rates out here in the valley are around $85hr

    Ditto!
I did the same as you, got my 2013 truck in anticipation of the big CARB crackdown but ended up running flatbed local, regional and OTR instead of pulling the end dump that's been parked in the yard for the last 6 months as the rates as far as I can see are at an all time low!
I must say though, regardless of the CARB deal it is so nice to have a nice new truck to drive again and if I'm totally honest about it, it actually works out cheaper to run even with the payments than the 1996 paid for truck it replaced.
Things will be getting pretty busy in the valley from next month on!
