I guess this question is mainly for those who load at the depots - Shell, Valero, Esso, etc. Have you ever hit a scully before? I've been doing this job since February and I *knock on wood* have never hit one before. But we don't load on retain, we check the compartments before getting to the rack, we have to print a declining balance and we have to pail check before hooking up to the arm. Also, I'm only carded at Shell right now - which works out because they're easily the cheapest in the city.
My boss told me back in the day they used to use the scully as the stopping point for loading. You vets wanna chime in on this one? We had a guy hit a scully last week, not sure if he's still working for us. He didn't check the compartment, he loaded on retain, didn't have his balance printed and didn't pail check. Seems like a firing is in the works.
Also, if you have hit a scully before, what were the repercussions?

As for scullying out . Yes . We do it intentionally at NuStar{Valero} in Grapevine/Southlake, TX. Reason? They could care less. I have tanks that are rated for 2000,3000,4500 gallons. Usually stay 100 gallons below. But I have gone here and in 25 gallon increments found the real capacity. Usually about 79 gallons over above #s. Weather/temp is based on 60' F so you have to watch that. But if need to haul say 7500 gallons of ULSD then I know I can put it all in front and rear and be good. At Magellan, Exxon, Motiva, Flint Hills , others scullying out is a big no no. Usually get locked out for several days. NuStar just prints out amount you received and your on your way. Unless you did have product go over top and had to shut rack down with emergency switch. Then you are on everyone's ship list including other drivers loading. May have to wait hour or more at night for rack operator to show up and reset control, vapor recovery, etc.steerinwheelholder Thanks this. -
In the old days if you sculled out you didn't get to finish load and might get locked out of terminal for a day or week. Now you might get locked out for life. Always check and recheck . If you share your truck always check for retain. Take your time. Never hurry on the loading rack. They all have cameras now so never tell a untruth to a operator that will get you kicked out fast they call your boss and as you know s--t rolls down hill fast . It's your CDL and your REP, take care of both. Good luck
Big Duker Thanks this. -
jamarrttin is correct. Most places get pee owed when you scully. And everything is on tape. Lot of it depends on how they are mixing your fuel. Some like Magellan have racks where ethanol in pumped in 1st and then gas. Others like Flint Hills are opposite. Exxon, Motiva, NuStar are mixed constantly so if there is a problem no one has to get calculator and decide what has to be done to make load mix legal. I showed a overfill one night at Flint Hills. Knew it was BS. Turned out that I had a bad sensor in front compartment. Stopped. Went to yard and swapped trucks. Next day shop fixed and went back and they set up arm to make load mix good. Note on BOL as well. Dispatch had called and talked to consignee and all was good as long as supplier said mix was legal.

I had a meter run over the preset. I didn't notice it I was loading 2 other arms . Probed out. At a terminal that doesn't allow you to drain anything into a bucket .
Called the yard rats... After proving to them that their crap computer overloaded my preset amount I was allowed to drain down and finish loading ....
If they could have pinned it on me I'd of been locked out for weeks...... -
I have probed out quite a few times over the loading heads running over the pre set, and some tanks having the probe set to low for the tank size.
lol one of my friends was trying to get a new guy carded at Magellan and it probed out right away, asked if he could get on top and check? cool guys at this one, pops the top and it is full of dyed kryo, the guy had not droped a 2500 tank from his first run. they called the boss and told him if he ever sent this guy back they would pull everyones cards.
this was the 10th time he had tried. -
Years ago it was no big deal to hit a sensor. With manifolds, you could even bleed down the overfill to another compt. Fast forward to now, it is a major offense and can get you banned from loading.

Take your time loading, one wrong button pushed or put the 3000 gal loading head on the 2000 gal compartment and you got a mess and a "lock out" !
