    HI All

Im located in St.Louis. Is there any food grade tanker outfits located in Missouri that hire students? In General, what would be the better food grade tanker companys that hire students regardless of their location?

I took a look at primes website. Student drivers have to put in 40,000 miles before you go solo. Even going team that would take at least 6 weeks, I would guess. I don think I can be in a truck with another man for 6 weeks.

Training while driving as a team seems odd to me. Not sure how or when the training takes place. If it's 40k of your own miles, that could take a while, of course.
Anyways, 6 weeks might be pretty standard for a lot of companies. I was with my trainer 5 weeks I think. We got home every weekend (he lived nearby), so that made it a lot easier. Several weeks nonstop would be a deal-killer for me.
Prime appears to be okay, some like it, some don't. However, they had a few quirks with training and hometime that personally turned me off to them.

The reason it takes so long is the trucks only go 48 mph.

Food grade on Prime, according to Prime recruiting staff requires 1 year OTR.
Food grade on Prime, according to Prime tank dispatch requires a CDL and 30,000 miles tnt.
As far as getting hired on? Gonna have a hard time swinging that past recruiting. I know there's been a few guys that did 6/7 months in reefer and then swung over to the tank division. Take and leave that information as you will.

Dispatching tank freight out of MO is a total pain in the ###, I'm literally living proof of that right this second. So that will be an issue.

I see...I see...I see a reefer unit in your future, young napper.

OH, and check out foodliner and Oakley. There's bound to be a bunch of milk haulers around here, I saw a whole fleet of them running tits to toes southbound on 60 the other day. Started singing convoy. They were not amused.

You get what you pay for. If you want up go to the driving school located in a disused grocery store parking log with the prospect of "job placement assistance" ( which doesn't guarantee a job ) then go right ahead.

    Wrecker:

I checked out foodliner and Oakley. According to their sites they both want 1 year experience. I love those shiney steel tanks

Yeah, go chat up Chinatown about needing exactly 1 year OTR. He'll explain the whole bag to you, I'm kind of surprised he's not been through here.

In my own experience I've applied to jobs that required x amount of years, without even being able to touch it and was still offered the job. A big one more recently was a company not but 5 miles from my house that pulled hazmat tank freight.
They wanted 3 or 5 years OTR, I had almost over two but under 3 when I applied and they still offered me the job, I didn't take it because I'm aware of my limitations and know I would be comfortable pulling either hazmat or tanker but at that point; not exactly doing both at the same time. I got some crap from that decision when I expressed my concern here on TTR, but I'm glad I made the choice. I screw up a lot, I'm in my 20's...who doesn't? And I really don't wanna screw up 45'ish thousand of a chem tanker pulling say...hydrochloric acid...:biggrin_25523:

But in all reality, Prime would be a good company to hit up even if it's just on reefer to get in the truck. Get your foot in the door, when you have a couple months wiggle your foot in a little more and make noises about getting into tanker. Hell, there's a real possibility that once you become an A seat (solo) you could just go talk to Austin/Dominic/Doug in tank dispatch and they would make it happen, assuming you're lucky enough or just ask the right people.

Don't let jobs requiring experience stop you from applying, it's always worth a shot.
Food grade is a pain in the butt sometimes, but considerably less than reefer or flatbed. I like it, and Prime is treating me well enough. Everyone is really laid back, very professional and to the point.
