Thanks for all the replies. We found an area. Although it is in a semi industrial park, it is not a secure area. There are a couple of other trucks that park there, there is a 24 hour Waffle House that is next to the area so there are eyes on the spot if anyone tries to pull some shennanigens. Best we could do. Any issues, the company will have to deal with them. I think it will be ok as long as I dont leave the trailer loaded.

The owner operator fuel haulers in our area park in a storage rental building area. It costs $100/month and is tax deductible. It is a fenced and secured area.

What you think and the law are evidently quite different. Trailer must be in secure area. Not heavily traveled area. Tell a DPS, Homeland Security, EPA, other agent that the folks at Waffle House were your security and see what they say. If they are in bad mood you won't like it and neither will the company. You will be the one dealing with it not the company. You parked it there. You think they are going to admit that they said it was OK to break high security rules to save your butt?? Tell your employer the situation. If they are legit they know the rules. I would tell them some agency told me to find secure parking or not leave it. If they whine and moan you don't want to work for them. Huge liability goes along with any type of fuel hauling.

Big is right. There are all kinds of laws and regulations besides just DOT. All DOT says is to park at least 5 feet away from any highway. Attendance is only required when the truck is being loaded or unloaded. Sure , we all stop for breaks and of course we know we are putting ourselves in jeopardy. If there are other gasoline tankers there then you would be better than just parking alone. If the tank has been de-gassed what you can do is place a copy of the cleaning cert. in a document protector and tape it to the tank. Remove your placards and do what I would do and lock the tank up. You can lock all hatches and downspouts so no one can mess with it. That's what we do with gasoline. But we also have a very decent break room at the terminal and it's much easier there. Even thou you get the tank de-gassed there will be trace amounts of vapor left over. Enough to cause problems. What Chevron used to do was fill the tank with water if it's going to sit. You'd be over weight if you drove it. So talk to the owner ( the owner) of the place you want to park and be careful where you place it. We had a driver get burned from a steam clearer because that burner ignited the tank vapors. If anyone can find any DOT or CFR's for this subject chime in. We really didn't deal with this too much because we were working like madmen.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I was in the hospital getting a new shoulder.

Am I the only one worrying that he is going to be hauling HAZ-MAT and doesn't know any of the basic rules and regs. How did you obtain your HAZ-MAT endorsement. Heck how did your company get it's HAZ-MAT certification. Or are you the company? Just thinking out loud.

Love's owns the property. They are away from the other traffic. They usually have a transport office onsite.

No but because the tanker is "attended" by the open store then they can scoot by in the grey area. I agree with you also.....(and a truck stop does constitute a safe haven )
