Whenever I see you question asked, Schneider bulk is by far the most recommended for starting out in tankers.

Food grade tanker, then you don't need hazmat.Indian River Transport/Oakley Transport/Indian River has been hiring new CDL grads lately, so they must be hard up for drivers.

 

I agree go food grade. If you can't flatbed no more your not gonna be able to handle pump hoses and climb up and down the ladder to pump loads off. Go with a food grade that pumps it off for you. Oakley requires you to pump, not sure about Indian river, Bynum you don't pump at all and they don't require tank exp just otr exp. Not sure what your restrictions actually are so you can make your own decision. Superior carriers also hires with no tank exp and we run alot of loads out of Texas. But we require pumping. Not all loads but you never know which

 

If you cant/wont sling iron and tarps, you not gonna like dragging/draining hoses and tightening dome-lids and clean-out caps. Also if you think getting Haz-Mat is a pain, you are absolutely positively gonna hate getting your T.W.I.C.

 

If you refuse to deal with TSA for your HazMat, you pretty much eliminate yourself from probably 80% of the tanker jobs in the oilfield, no matter how much driving experience you have. TWIC and HazMat, along with other things such as H2S are required by most companies out here. The ads advertising for help say it over and over again.

Why, may I ask, do you insist that they look into your military records? It's not going to make you any more likely to get a TWIC card or HazMat.

They don't care if you are a war hero, but they do care if you are a terrorist or a convicted drug dealer.

 

TWIC takes 5 minutes on the computer to enroll, then walk in to the prescribed location, give finger prints, have a photo taken, answer a few questions, out in 15 minutes. A few days later receive your TWIC card in the mail. Really easy to do!

 

Yeah, TWIC is simple. HazMat however....I think the easiest thing was the test at DPS. It took almost two months for them to process my HazMat. And this is after after having the TWIC card for a year. I was told it was the same background check used, so why they have to do it twice is mystifying to me.

But, after talking to a few other people who got their HazMat around the same time as me indicates they were just backed up with applications.

 

If you refuse to get a Haz endorsement then you should probably find another type of freight. Even food grade hauls haz, liquor loads, besides the money is in chemical.
