I have just finished my first year and hoping some doors of opportunity have opened. Seems jobs are good and plenty in Houston. Not surprising since it is the tanker Mecca of the world. However the commute is killing me from Austin.
the job market seems tighter here. I'm interested in hauling fuel. Also, I don't think my marriage will last another year if I'm OTR. Suncoast is at the top of my list. They rejected me at six months experience. That was a face to face meeting. Now, the recruiter says there are no positions in Austin. KAG is high on my list as well but was rejected due to lack of fuel hauling experience. That was an on line app. Coastal is lower on the list however I was not impressed with their equipment. I have applied at Mission Petroleum and hoping for an offer.

Any job hunting tips would be much appreciated.

austin is a tough area to get anything decent out of besides otr. fought that for a while as well. just to the south in san antonio you could pull just bout anything you want. east of austin in elgin, there is an ACME brick plant that tends to hire a good number of drivers for their day cabs but thats about all i ever saw on a regular basis.

eh, maybe not totally. i know that some of the regional electric co-ops were looking for flat drivers for a while that had ya home a lot if not daily...PAM (i know not the best but...) was and has been looking for drivers to shuttle trailers from San Marcos to laredo and back... NTI is also but that may be only out of San Antonio... i'd also check with sunrise hauling end dump they seem to be hiring everywhere along the 35 corridor. Tri-Mac has a yard just north of austin and they also seem to be hiring quite often. i'll let ya know if i here of anything else.

I'm based in Austin and commute to Houston as I'm an O/O hauling chemicals. I'm used to the commute but you're right about Coastal. Good tractors but their trailers are old with no ABS, so any small amount of water on the road and the trailers can be all over the place. Mission is OK but poor management with high turnover. They've lost quite a bit of business to KAG who operate in the Austin area as PCT. Those guys are O/O so no company drivers. Your best bet is either Suncoast or Dupre. Dupre pay by the hour and I know that they are hiring. And yes, I've worked for them all. With your experience Dupre should start you off at a good hourly rate. But they do micro manage you a tad. The area manager operates out of San Antonio, called Mike Luna..aka Jason. I moved on because I wanted to buy my own rig and enjoy my independence. Good luck.

Thanks Dr. I recieved a call back from Dupre and they are processing my app so hoping to get on board. Suncoast, my first choice isn't hiring. As far as micro management, well that can be a downer. Schneider allows quite a bit of freedom. Just get there on time and you rarely hear from the office. The pay is low considering the hours though. Also, every time my wheels stop rolling, so does my pay which I'd like to go hourly and get paid for ALL my time.seems like O/O may be the way to go in the long run considering the turn over rate in these companies.
