i am a new owner and driver of a T880 dump truck with an eaton 8LL. i am having trouble getting back into gear once i miss a gear and sometimes have to stop and start over and many times once stopped it doesn't want to go into second (starting gear w/o a load) without grinding, i try double clutching, pushing all the way to the floor, reeving without the clutch and i just don't know what to do. also what is the secret to downshifting

Your probably revving up the engine too much when downshifting. Downshifting is the hardest part of driving when your new or to a new truck. It's a feeling that you will get over time.
When I first started driving I had an Ezpass to the tolls but still had to come to a complete stop so I could start all over again because I couldn't downshift."semi" retired Thanks this. -
Not to worry, stuff happens. This one is easy. Your Eaton is an awesome tranny. It'll mesh smoothly if the RPM's are matched. Don't rush it, move the r's up, if that's not it, drop off a few. Also, use your tachometer, around 4-500 r's between gears, for the most part.

you clutch brake might need to be adjusted or replaced,, if you depress your clutch pedal all the way and it grinds when you try to place your truck in gear,,check your clutch brake

Only push pedal to floor when at a stop. All the way down engaged the clutch brake, going all the way down will shorten the life of the clutch brake (which could be the problem already)then you will have trouble going into gear when at stop. It can be replaced without pulling the transmission. Just ask the parts person for the two piece brake.
Like a previous person said, the tach is your friend. You can contact eaton and they will tell you the rpm range for each shift. Plus, don't stress too much over it. It will get smoother with practice. Everybody scrapes gears occasionally, if they say they don't they are a liar! -
I concur not the clutch brake. I drive two different 8LL's and the clutch brakes on both are different. One of them would take forever to get into gear when stopped. It was a bad that you almost had to feather it in as you were stopping every time. But then you had to hold the clutch in for the entire time stopped. After an adjustment ( found out the last guy that adjusted went the wrong way ) it is smooth as silk.
The 8LL is a great transmission. The oldest one that I drive has the 3,7 in the 4,8 hole and it feels almost indestructible. It's mated to a 3406. The newer one I drive is mated to a more modern C-12 and it feels like a stirring a five gallon bucket of nuts and bolts.
