bing or startpage( they don't keep up with your searches) info on end dumps and actually dumping loads.LOTS of info online which will give you a great insight into what we do. I really don't care what drivers tell you about them not dropping the air bags on both truck and trailer, dump the air bags on both.Only thing i can imagine is they have never pulled/dumped from a 40' frameless. Obviously on spring ride equipment you can't drop the bags.

anyway, watch and pay close attention to how the other drivers dumping ahead of you are unloading in that particular area.ALL dump sites bring about different scenarios.some are gravel, some are concrete, some are hard packed dirt, some are soft yard like areas, but each one prompts an assessment as you pull up and ready the equipment to dump.it will be second nature and instinctive in short order.DO NOT get complacent however.

i pulled a spread axle/lift front axle aluminum end dump for a long time(yes it looked cool but i am in and out so much quicker than those that pull bowed and roll over tarped trailers) and then the broker i pull for obtained a steel closed tandem end dump with a flip tarp.I LOVE IT. still getting used to loading it properly(got another over axle last week)but man, talk about in and out of the rain/snow/wind/whatever loading or unloading as opposed to rolling that tarp over bows that need to be moved for most loads and then put back in to tarp and then removed again to dump, well you get the picture.

oh.one last thing.remember to not allow the loader to put more than say 76,000 gross if you are pulling a 39'-40' end dump because you will get bridge law tickets.they aren't cheap.spread axles are different due to the spread obviously.it will take a bit to learn how to get loaded legally. i have load gauges on both truck and trailer but still get it wrong because of the area that i get loaded in.it is not ever level and straight which seems to throw the load gauges off.some may dispute(just like those that argue there is no need to dump the air) that but i know what i post regarding my situation so take that into consideration.

not sure of too many downsides as for the most part the load/unload hours are all daylight and other than the darn mud i wade around in i can't think of a real obvious downside. there is the occasional load that simply will not come out and then the pucker factor sets in but that is rare thankfully.

    best of luck.

I pulled a frameless USTS for 5 years, the only thing I hated to haul was cotton seed, had to walk it down to get enough on to pay. there little tricks to haul anything, keep a roll of plastic in the side box. oh and a roll of duct tape, for the wet loads from brewery's. when I hauled lime and distillers grain, I would get about 3 ft out from around the gate, it you can get it to move 1 time the air will get back in it an unload though the grain door. just take your time and look! before you act!

    Weedburner out!

Actually heard this from the guy at the company I'm taking to. They run about 90 company trucks locally and have low driver turnover rate (not wagons, drivers lol) I have pulled skateboards and currently pulling a box. I'm looking for a change, but dont want to get into something I might regret. They pay is by the load and I dont mind getting paid to run hard, but....dont want to be shoveling out the wagon either. These guys pull alot of sand, stone and fertilizer. although, I see their trucks all the time and rarely see a shovel. Pete daycabs, newer ones are glider kits, with 40' frameless Macs and East. I road with an O/O friend one day when he was hauling sand....doesnt look much easier than that, but I know there is more to the game.

yes there is more to the game but oh,what an excellent game. you will acclimate quickly and honestly, you will probably not desire to pull anything else.the hours are great,in and out at shippers/consignees for the most part(always the exception),and, imho, you'll use a cb radio at most places thus the opportunity to give/get bear reports, traffic reports, and scale reports.

let us not forget the pucker factor involved with many of the dumps, even though most truly slide on off as they should, because you just don't ever really know until the load has been offed.adrenaline rushes are present and often.

it really doesn't get much better than that-

hey mattnatti. do you set the trailer brake only before you dump? did it take a little getting used to when the trailer pushes the truck around? i still kind of get a rush out of the situations that are tight and when the truck lunges forward after that initial surge forward. some are ultra quick and others are extremely sluggish.

    label me weird.

I've got a 42 ft spread that I started out hauling scrap in when I decided to slow down cow hauling 3 years ago. I have hauled some feed products as well as other stuff. I have never shoveled a load yet. Not to say I haven't used a shovel to clean up a bit or help the process but it's really not bad. Full fat bran loaded hot on a humid day in my Timpte hopper that's bad.
