We have a CAT 3406B engine in a KW T600 with a Peterbuilt rear end. Kind of a Frankenstein truck. Was an OTR with a sleeper converted into a Dual axle dump truck.

So here is the problem. Truck was running fine up until this cold snap we had in Northern Indiana at New Years. Started the truck got it out to job and it started making strange noises. Got it back to the shop and had a mechanic come look to see if it was safe to run to him. Had a variable knocking noise in it. Not consistent. When revved up it would knock variably and sound like something was going to come out. He suggested Stanadyne fuel treatment and change filters and see if that worked. Put two bottles in new filter, ran for a few minutes and let sit 24hr. Next day, still some knock so we let sit until next morning. Have a company just down the road that works on injectors so we ran down there gently to get their opinion. When we got there, engine really started making noise, they came out to check it and it sounded fine. Then I revved up a little and the squeaking started. Sounded to me like a piston going up and down without oil to lube cylinder. They thought it sounded like #4 but that is as far as we got. Brought it back and shut it down. Going to have it towed to mechanic but don't know what we might be looking at. Any ideas? Are we looking at a rebuild and if so what is the cost range on something like that?

I couldn't tell you your problem but I can tell you how it was with us. Cat is in the business to move dirt. Any other engine is like second to them and you have to wait.

Taking it to a Cat shop? Truck shop or general mechanic? May help determine price, as well as if they only use gen-u-wine Cat parts, Chinese parts, or something in between. Also depends on what all's tore up, might be something simple, might be cheaper to replace the whole thing. Might start looking at used motors with warranties, so you can have a number in mind when they start talking estimates.
