Clothing for fuel delivery to service stations?

    He could have told me about the required clothing (steel toed shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, flame resistant clothing) a week ago, but he didn't (and I'm beginning to see why his previous hires didn't stay around after they got some experience. He waited until 6 pm Friday night).

    He referred me to the local Carhart store, but I'm not buying anything until I know for a fact what is needed. Seems that NFPA 70E is a standard, but a kit seems to be around a thousand bucks.....


    He didn't mention I would be 1099'd until the second visit. He flinched a bit when I responded "so I need to set aside 30% of my pay for taxes". He now knows I will be doing the math from the very first paycheck, not at the end of the year.

    I am the sort of person to calmly tell you in a monotone voice you aren't doing anything to earn my loyalty.....

    He also mentioned he will be starting terminal to terminal deliveries.

    Any help is appreciated,

    Just buy some coveralls and you throw them on when loading only at the oil terminal

    I have hauled fuel and never needed any special clothing. I can see safety shoes but the rest I'd let them buy. If they won't then it wasn't the job for you.

    Unless you're stuck, walk away from that 1099. It's actually about 40 cents on the dollar you have to put away, just to be safe. If you really need the gig, do it for a couple of months and keep every single receipt you incur then get the hell out. I don't care if its for a pack of chewing gum. You're going to need all the write-offs you can get.

    Do you really have 20 years exp? I have 3yrs (with zero tank exp) and was hired on by an hourly paying W2 company who provides FR coveralls and non-FR uniforms. So I would look around some more.

    To answer your question though, you will need full PPE at racks/refineries/plants/etc. This is hard hat, glasses, steel toe w/ heel, gloves, and FR clothing. Your best (cheapest) option will be wearing normal work clothes for most activities and then putting on FR coveralls when it is required.     As long as the terminal operators see the little FR patch they won't bother you. I have never had anyone ask me about whether my FR was nfpa 70e, cat 1, 2 etc.

    Also terminal to terminal deliveries will probably be bio dsl or ethanol.

    Don't just but any steel toed boots. You need to buy oil resistant non slip boots especially at the racks when loading as it can get pretty slippy as I found out very quickly.
    I even bought my own chemical resistant gloves by the doz. that had a nice lining. only because the companies always seemed to buy the really cheap ones.
    But thats a personal preference.
