When human beings run business, unions, governments, they have to be controlled and watched by the people of this country. If not, they can get out of hand on either side, and someone has to regain proper control. People are always willing to take care of their own pockets, regardless of who it effects; power can corrupt. Then the people should be able to take back control of that entity. Throughout history, there has been corruption on both sides of the fence. I could never totally trust a Union, the Government, or a rich business owner. Therefore I think they are all needed to keep a close eye on each other. Funny ain't it?

UPS lay people off of work? Never. Not in the last few decades at least. 10k people got liveable wages and nobody lost their job.

First off, turn off your damn caps lock.

IT'S CALLED, GO HOME AND FILE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. UNIONS DON'T CREATE JOBS. THE BUSINESS DOES.
You paid $50 for a next day shipment because it was put on four trucks, a pakage van and an airplane. Like I said, the union, during negotiations, created 10k full time jobs with liveable wages and nobody lost their job. Since the union is supposedly costing consumers so much, do you think you would have saved money by going with another carrier? Go get some price quotes before you claim that you overpaid.

THE ONLY JOBS THE GOVERNMENT CREATES IS A GOVERNMENT JOB; MILITARY, FBI, TSA, WELFARE OFFICE, ETC, WHICH IS PAID FOR BY TAXING BUSINESS AND PEOPLE. IT'S THE BUSINESS THAT PUTS YOU TO WORK. LET'S FACE IT, IF I'M A BUSINESS OWNER, I HIRE YOU, I PAY TAXES TO THE GOVERNMENT, YOU PAY TAXES TO THE GOVERNMENT. WHAT JOB DID THEY CREATE? IF THEY GIVE ME A TAX BREAK, THEN THAT ALLOWS ME TO PUT MORE MONEY INTO MY BUSINESS, WHICH "MAY" ALLOW ME TO HIRE SOMEONE ELSE, OR INCREASE YOUR WAGE. HOWEVER, IF MY BUSINESS CLOSES, YOU AIN'T WORKING, AND THE GOVERNMENT AIN'T GETTING THE TAXES. TAX BREAKS OR THE UNION WON'T DO YOU ANY GOOD IF MY BUSINESS SHUTS DOWN. THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOMEONE WILLING TO TAKE THE RISK AND OPEN A BUSINESS.
The government can create, and dispose of, jobs in many different ways. For one, we could get rid of nafta. We could close our border to mexicano truckers. Increasing border control security would stop illegals from taking our jobs. Welfare to work programs would increase the number of jobs. I can go on all day on how the government can make new jobs.

Cutting taxes isn't the only way to make jobs, and it's just a quick fix. Our government is strapped for cash as it is. We all know that "trickle down" economics/reaganomics/1980's or whatever you want to call it wont get you anywhere in the long run.

OK, first off, my Caps lock is my "damn" business. Secondly, I frequently ship firearms through UPS. The reason they have to go Next Day Air "Saver" is because a few years ago UPS was having trouble with guns being stolen by "THEIR EMPLOYEES". After numerous complaints from gun dealers and manufacturers, they decided, not to have Law Enforcement or Corporate Security get involved to solve the problem. What did they do? OK, all of you "gun people" have to ship guns overnight, so it gets into fewer hands, and there will be fewer thefts. Yeah we know our employees are stealing, BUT IT'S YOUR FAULT!!! So now we pay more, while the dirtbag theives that were stealing are still handling packages. Yeah, Great Job!!! So now at least, FedEx can do it cheaper, and USPS is allowing them to go Priority Mail or Express mail from Dealer to Dealer. PROBLEM SOLVED. WITHOUT THE HELP OF THE ALMIGHTY UPS. We haven't had a single firearm stolen in over 3 years now. And if UPS can't put it on "4 trucks, a package van and an airplane" for the price of FedEx or the US Post Office, then they can keep their service. THANKS!!!

Last. When the "Government creates those Jobs" by cutting NAFTA, etc. What is going to happen. Someone will OPEN, START or EXPAND their BUSINESS to accomidate more employees and or better wages. Government can cut this or that all they want, but they do not "CREATE" jobs. They allow Business to create more jobs by taking a load off of the business owner, be it taxes, regulation or credits. AGAIN, try taking away the business, and leave nothing but Government and Unions and watch what happens. Everyone will be sitting around with their thumb up their *ss, except for the IRS employees and your elected leaders.

minnie wage

actually the feds determine min. wage...

and imagine how low it would be without unions fighting for YOUR rights...

(truck driving would still be a scumbag low end job if not for the work union truckers did - and are still doing today to ensure we keep above the vast ocean of 7$ an hour living in america)

I don't think so........ There was a time in this country when AMERICAN workers were treated like slaves. Some big Produce companies, Mining Companies, Steel Companies, Big Building Companies were taking advantage of the workers, like you and me. If we got out of line, or tried to rally the workers to stand up and demand better pay, the company thugs would beat the #### out of them and throw them out of the gate. Meanwhile, the fat cats were getting fatter and richer beyond belief. Jobs were scarce and people had to work to survive. The fat cats knew it, and all of them banded together to keep wages low, hours high, production high, labor grueling, and even made you buy your tools from their company store to do your job. You bought them on credit and paid out of your check, so you were always indebted to them to stay. If you failed to pay that debt, you would be jailed by the locally owned politicians and their local Police, who got fat from payoffs, land deals and gifts from the other fat cats. UNIONS changed all of that. The companies and local politicians no longer made all of the rules. Sure over the years there was some corruption that crept into the unions, I know that. But very little compared to what was happening before them, and everything, including the Union Leadership has to be kept in check, just like your Government.

I said all of that for one reason. If you think for one minute, that we wouldn't slowly, but surely go back to that type of cruelty, then you're nuts!!! Give the fat cat business CEO's a free reign and let them make all of the rules. Let them dictate your wages, hours, production with no one looking over their shoulder. Look at Politicians today. They bend over for big business everyday, and pocket the bucks, the land deals, the vacations in Europe and the big cars and kickbacks just like they did back then. And I'm not talking about Dems or Republicans. It happens on both sides of the aisle. So you have very little protection from the Government. Now take away the Unions and any organization of workers......... and watch what happens. You don't want to work for that wage we give you? .......fine, Mr and Mrs Illegal Mexican do.... you're fired. In fact, I'm going to lower the wage and increase the hours and production for less money, plus you now work 6 or 7 days per week, 12 hours a day. You want a job, then you can work with them and like them....... for peanuts. GET THE PICTURE!!!!Now as a retailer and consumer, you make less and pay more.

Want the retailer to pay less? Try getting fuel costs down from Foreign sources, taxes down, certain parts of the stupid environmentalists laws that the government enforces with the new thugs at the DEQ.(like Coca-Cola syrup as hazardous material with $10,000 DEQ permits or Karo Syrup special handling requirements with DEQ permission at $50,000). There has to be checks and balances. Stop and think about Wal-mart, and really ask yourself.... what would they do if they had no one breathing down their backs and trying to force them to comply???
Sorry for the Novel..... but Unions are needed, whether you work for one or not.

Now you're really talking out of your ***. UPS created "saver" as a way to SAVE money (hence the name, saver) for customers who require day definite, but not time definite, service. It moves through the same infrastructure, but the destination delivery driver doesn't bump the "saver" parcels to the beginning of the route.

So the implementation of "saver" service doesn't have anything to do with gun stores, nor does it have anything to do with the UNION. The unions cant be doing bad if you're still shipping thru UPS and USPS.

As for employee theft, UPS and FEDex both have comprable claim rates; being union has nothing to do with that either. USPS has an extremely low claim rate because of their "small parcel" infrastructure being as efficient as it is.

I like how you chose to argue that ending NAFTA wouldn't create jobs, how convenient. That may not create jobs directly but it sure as hell would open the door. What about welfare to work programs? Decreasing class sizes in public schools? Those surely will create jobs directly, and there are many ways in which the government creates jobs indirectly.

Who is trying to take away the businesses? Nobody is arguing that but you. We all want our companies to do good.

i have had many jobs in the past 14 yrs in this business. I've lost count at this point; i think 17. The best jobs, for the most part, were with the companies that had union shops. Best both in terms of money and atmosphere.

If you do not have a union, you do not have any real senority. You may think you do, and managment may say you do. You do not.

If you do not have a union, you need to get a lawyer now! Even if you are in a union, you still need to get to know a good lawyer a soon as possible.

Does this all mean i love or hate unions? Not nessesarily either way. i'm just posting my observations i've picked up over the years.

My next job prospects WILL be with unionized companies. And yes, there are unionized OTR companies.
