I agree. When I was hauling freight for my company, before I was put on tankers permanently, I ran into that constantly. The funny thing is, it did not matter if they were a union warehouse or not. They both could make you wait. Likewise, since I was paid by the hour, it really didn't bother me. That might be the wrong approach but that was a reallity for me. It was sad to see others who had to wait while not being compensated. There is really nothing you can do. Whenever I could though, I would tell the receiver to take care of those drivers first if my schedule allowed. My company would not have liked it but those drivers certainly did. There is something to say about common courtesy and respect for others. There are many more receivers that are non Union as opposed to being represented.

edit: UPS too, they're hiring all over the chicago area...
Last time UPS was hirring drivers in the Chicago area was Feb., 2008. Since then they have only been hirring part time shift workers for the dock. I sersously dout they get any bennifts from the union.

To me that is what a Union is...(IMO)

I've never been a fan of that either, that being said a union does offer some things as a collective bargainer that you just can't get as an individual. I'm not sure how collective bargaining impacts OTR but driving a straight truck for the past seven years it does offer some benefits that make it worth while.
Pros:
good contract negotiating
good compensation
good insurance
grievance procedures

Cons:
seniority is EVERYTHING
insurance is expensive if you don't have a family
sometimes the union is not in your corner

This year has been particularly brutal for me in the concrete industry, and a lot of chinks in the union armor have left me exposed. Seniority has cost me to date 35k this year, I got a pretty serious burn in August and the lack of work left me un-insured which is setting me back an additional 3500, and now I find myself looking to make a switch to OTR which is something I've always wanted to do but making the money I was in concrete just couldn't pull the trigger on. I think overall the unions are a net gain, but like anything there are things not to like.

Seems to me that if you join a company that already has an established union that it may work a little differently to a company that isnt union that goes union. Totally different scenarios.
I joined a company that was already union, and I have no problems with it, and I do like the benefits etc.

Look at the Mexican trucker issue. I don't think it's dead. Just on simmer. Strong unions really representing their workers (most don't anymore) could carry a lot of clout. Imagine what unions like the IBEW, Teamsters , and railroad workers could have done to the country to teach ronald reagan a lesson when he fired the air traffic controllers. Yet the majority of working stiffs applauded him, saying "that's what we need, a strong president who's bought and paid for by the banks and corporations."

Look at how the Police unions became so powerful. Politicians are afraid of them because then a campaign would start such as "don't vote for so and so, he's soft on crime." Which is why a cop in California can retire at 90% wages with medical benefits after 30 years. I'll bet the politicians wouldn't try to import foreigners to do police work at a lower wage like they do to other jobs.

IMO anyway.
California (2.3 million), New York (1.9 million), and Illinois and Michigan (both 1.0 million) had the greatest number of union members.

California $41 billion in the hole
New York $15.4 billion in the hole
Illinois $2 billion in the hole
Michigan $1.5 billion in the hole
