If they would only keep to the job security side of things, than a return to the use of unionized labor by industries that have since rejected it may be deemed acceptable.
If it worked that way the unions would be redundant. Or would it be the government UNION employees of the NLRB that would be redundant?

Remember, there was NO NLRB when unions began. Today and for some time, there has been.

Neither one works right.
Hmmmm......that's interesting!

Wouldn't it be more fair to be paid mileage and a half after 40 hours of driving, it if I made .30 cents per mile I would make .45 cents for every hour I drove that week after 40...
Maybe.
Where is it written life is fair?

hating unions

I am not overly fond of unions and I have worked with 4 different unions over the years, they did a lot of good early on but as more than a few have said they have gotten corrupt. A lot of the reason unions have gotten so weak I believe it started when the flight controllers went on strike and the government replaced the on strike workers. As for loosing jobs because of high wages I think that contributed but we also need to look at the salaries and the benefits of upper management, CEO's and people like that do they really need millions of dollars to survive. I don't think so. Why are they paid so much can they actually go out and build their product, the fact of the matter is without the worker there is no company, and if the CEO's would take some cuts in their pay and benifits the profits would go up just a bit. You gotta wonder, at least I do. Ya'll be careful out there and enjoy the day.

I hate Unions!

I hear you and agree totally on that one and I live in Michigan. I have never been a member of a union I liked and was always forced into a closed shop situation. They can take their unions and shove'em! Now that thats said...I am getting ready to go to trucker school in Southbend IN. a PAM trucking school, any advice for me...what to watch out for...and is pay per mile better than based on performance?

Thanks...school rookie as of the 25th.

NO,that is not a dumbing down outlook,it is the truth. I do not hate unions ,but ya gotta look at the writing on the wall. They are definitly on their way out due to greed, laziness, etc. They are pricing therir members right out of work, due to the fact that there are many people in this country who are willing to work hard for a days pay. Any time I went to a union place to load or unload I knew it would take at least 3 times as long to get out of there. This was due to the union workers just idling around and not wanting to do any work at all.You back into a dock and wait 2 or 3 hrs.to get unloaded while the overpaid union guys sit around on their dead #####,doing absolutely nothing constuctive. Then when they finally do decide to unload the trailer they are whining about how they have to work. The union shops have turned into a bunch of overpaid whiners, who noone wants to deal with.

I'd rather just unload the truck myself with a pallet jack, which may take half the time as a union forklift operator, get someone to sign the bill if that doesn't require union name signers, and be gone.

But that wouldn't be politically correct.

My Truckers Blog : 1
local 207

ill tell ya how MY union experiance was

i hire on to an outfit to run heavy equipment, a goon spoon (shovel) and drive a truck

after i hire on i find out they used to be union but the members voted it out

NLRB board decides they were in the wrong and reinstate company/union negotiations

union goes back online.....
pay did not increase
still had to pay for our own insurance
suddenly had to pay dues or were terminated + % of weekly gross ( at a higher rate than our other, longer unionized shop)
i go to a stewards class, and learn the unions ways
basicly we were paying a union that did absolutly nothing but take our money and give us nothing in return

fast forward a year
7 equipment operators have not been brought back this year ( i was one),
the reasoning? the company is trying to lower wages DOWN to union standerds....i made more than the union said i should basicly
none of the groundman have been givin the reccommended raises for this same reason
safety? lol...thats a monday morning meeting and thats it
substanderd equipment? yup they got it
productivity has gone way down from what i hear
quality....few crews have it there, fewer i would go to work with

and yet you cant get rid of the guy that does nothing but complain and sleep in the shop truck, this is the same groundman who tells me one day i have a backhoe and should use it to dig up the gas main line i was trying to expose and not tear in half becuase he wasnt paid to run a shovel...we seriously had a half hour argument over this until i sent him to the shop to discuss his employment opertunities with the shop manager, still, despite all his screwups and generaly not givin a ####, we couldnt run him off
CDL was required per the job, but only 4 poeple had it out of 23

but in the unions defence...my dad who works on the power side of the same outfit, and is in differnt local...has a great gig and everything works like it should...but should the doctor take away his medical card hes out of a job, so much for his 10 vested years in the IBEW and his 12 vested in the teamsters

kind of a rambling post i know, and im not even sure if theres a point in it, but yes i am for unions if they are run right, are not greedy and serve thier intended purpose
