I think you and others here miss the points being made by union drivers... it's different for different industries... here is a quote I am taking from another statement made by someone on this thread:

"50-60 years ago unions were good, they had legitimate greviances and provided away for workers to be treated fairly."

Now tell me, please.... after reading the thousands, literally, of grievances listed by drivers on this site in various, hundreds, of threads... tell me... why drivers would NOT benefit from a union v. what is and has been going on? Because, drivers TODAY, like other workers in other industries 50 to 60 years ago, have plenty of grievances. No one can argue that logically.
Respondents!
Unfortunately there can be some truth to what you say. I experienced it in the United Steel Workers as a Weldor for Allis-Chalmers. But for the most part, overall there was a presidence for having a Union in the work place. Were you jealous because you weren't receiving those few perks. It's called relations. If you made a mistake in your job that perhaps cost some time of money you didn't get fired as you could have with no union. Don't cry over spilled milk. You've got to grasp the big picture. It's not about you as an individual, it's the whole group.

Labor is heading for total disaster in the coming future unless we organize these big companies. UPS is the largest LTL package carrier in the U.S. Unions aren't causing company losses in profits there. Why because UPS is in it to win it. They handle their business. They are still in control and the union members have the right frame of mind to keep that mind set going. Unions aren't there to control companies, they provide a safety net in a way for their members because people aren't perfect, they can make a mistake, get reprimanded, not lose their jobs for being human. Every large Trucking company in the United States whether LTL carriers or truck load carriers needs to be organized. Automobile manufacturers should be next. Nissan,Toyota, Acura, Honda, Mitsubishi, all those Asian manufacturers in the uiited states. Americans need to wake up and smell the capucinno. Your sons and daughters could very well be part of labor when they get out of school. Everyone will not be academic professionals, the world needs ditch diggers too.

unions gave you the weekend

I work out of an insulators union and beside all the #### about higher wages and laziness, unions are the ones who established safer work places and have a go between when there's conflict among the worker and management.Non-union workers may make $20 an hour and brag about working, but part of their wages goes to health benefits(if they have benefits),insurance, etc. So part of that $20 bucks never goes into their pockets. The union worker can have a package worth ,say,$40 dollars an hour and the contractor pays for his health and insurance from that package and so he gets ALL the $20 in his pocket.Does that make sense?
UNION YES!!!!

Help me convey that to these other misguided folks. These trucking companies need organizing seriously. I live in Kansas City. There are companies taking advantage of this desent in the industry. Midcities Motor Freight is scandalous as any trucking can be. Their dispatchers need some sensitivity and ethics training. They talk to their drivers as if they're slaves, and if they discharge you they will give you a less than appreciable reference. This company is an example of where the trucking industry is going. They have a career ad on Career Builder .Com. This misfit of a company is in the intermodal industry, the worst industry in transportation. It needs union representation like the desert needs water. Federal and State Dot needs to go into these rail road yards an put those junk chassis' out of service, so they won't be taken out on public thorough fares. Mokan Container is another rail junk yard that needs to be brought in line as well. They don't pay no money anyway and they have the audacity to be picky about drivers who apply for those chicken little driving jobs. Both places need Union organizing in the worst way. Unions in any industry is good for the people

The problem with organizing that sector is that traditionally Container hauling jobs were filled by leftovers - and ones with crappy records - and foreign drivers...

So when you step to them to organize - they are fearful since their companies tell them "you are lucky to have this with your #### record - or you are lucky to have any job in America with no language skills etc etc...)

Most of the container companies operate through Union environments - i.e. the railroad boys are union - and the shipyards are also... but the accepted way is to kinda pity the container guys...

a decent container driver with a clean record is hard to find.. not saying there are none - but typically there is a reason a guy would drive junk and be verbally and financially abused by his employer...
