DOT presses forward with cross-border program

DOT presses forward with cross-border program
6/8/07
Quote:
Friday, June 8, 2007 – With the ink barely dry on President Bush’s signature on supplemental war funding legislation that included restrictions on a Mexican cross-border trucking program, the U.S. DOT published a Federal Register notice that largely blows off the issues and directives outlined by Congress, OOIDA officials said.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration published a notice in the Federal Register Friday, June 8, that outlines responses to a laundry list of directives Congress included as part of the supplemental war spending legislation.
Section 6901 directed the agency, among other things, to publish Federal Register notices on a variety of regulatory and safety concerns. Rather than publish individual, detailed notices on each issue, FMCSA rolled the information into one notice.
And, it’s only giving the public 20 days to comment on the information.
“It’s apparent the Bush administration is thumbing its nose at the will of the American people and Congress,” said Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.
“Lawmakers crafted a very well-thought-out piece of legislation that – had the DOT took it to heart and followed it – would have injected some sanity into a program that still has too many safety and security issues that have yet to be resolved.”

This just burns me up. Any idiot knows this program will cost thousands of US jobs, and cause many small companies to go out of business.

I am afraid that is what's behind this project. Cheaper freight makes the big corporations more money. More money means more lobbiest donations.

I can't believe I would ever be backing the same thing that the Sierria Club and the Teamsters are.

We must unite to stop this. We the people stopped the immigration bill in the 11th hour with millions of calls, e-mails, and faxes.

That bill was sure to pass 48 hours before its defeat.

The same can be done here. Send the letter described in the article.

As said in the movie, " I'm mad as ####, and I'm not going to take it anymore !!!"

USA Mexican trucks in the USA?

What in sam HELL is President Bush thinking? For that matter, what the hell is the FMCSA thinking... They want to allow Mexico to come into OUR country and driver there trucks to haul freight but we can not go to Mexico to deliver the freight that is going there!!! What a crock of crap!!!

It is bad enough that the Mexican President (whatever the hell his name is, Vicente Fox or something like that) encourages his citizens to come here illegally to work on the farms and in the fields for next to nothing. But now we are going to allow thier trucks to come here and take away OUR job's as well? What is this country comming to!!! I can not believe that I spent 6 yrs of my life in the US Army for this to happen!!!

Has anyone seen the condition of most of the trucks that Mexican trucking companies run? Most of these trucks are ones sent there because they can not pass US DOT inspections anymore and now they want to let them come back into this country and haul freight again? Interesting concept!!! Way to go President "MESS UP" Bush!!!

Just so there is no confussion, I think this is a bad idea and blame it on Bush. HOWEVER I do support our Troops over sea's fighting in Iraq. We went there and done what we set out and now we need to stay the coarse and FINISH the job. That is the way most of our soldiers feel about it as well.

bush knows there is no one who will do anything about except complain. Will our honest firm go to bat for the truckers, yeah right, they like the idea of driving down wages, the union drivers cant do much, they are obligated by legal contract. You are hoping that your politicians will come to your rescue?
