ybfjax,

There is a gentleman on this site whose name is BigDaddyJollyRob. He is in a teamster driving school. You might want to contact him. As for me, the first teamster job that I had gave me the opportunity to train and obtain my (class 1) license thru them. Try looking up the locals in your area and ask if they have any help to offer. Just explain your situation to them.

If you have to do the student route, good luck to you as you will need it. Try your best to find the right company that will fit your needs. Remember that this is your career and hopefully a year of OTR will go by fast.

Yes same for me. I worked on the dock at the Teamster company I work for, and trained with one of their experienced drivers on my days off.
IMO it gave me a solid training, I learnt the ways of the company, and got exposed to the whole spectrum of easy to really difficult pickups or deliveries as well as the array of traffic situations.
Once I got my CDL I put my name down for a driving position, and the rest is history.
The bonus of doing it this way was that I already had an established seniority from working on the dock (in our situation dock and drivers are all on the same seniority list) and got the job I wanted.

Good luck!

yeah - I did not want to discourage anyone ... it is just a shame when a new guy gets a great job and then has a completely normal accident and gets canned...

union companies tend to be a litle strict and not very forgiving... BUT that is mostly because they always had very experienced guys to choose from.

times are changing - and so will their attitude towards accidents.

Is there another site that specifically lists freight/trucking companies that are unionized?

So far this is what I come up with:

ABF
DHL
New Penn Motor Express
Penske Truck Leasing
Roadway
Standard Forwarding Company
USF Holland
Yellow Transportation

are there any others?

Or even on this site or if you want to include the list in your reply, that would be helpful. Trying to gather as much as possible here.

ybfjax, it would probably help the Teamster guys on this site to know where you are for them to better help you!

[LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. if you go to their job bank link it will list NATIONAL contacts and companies...

for not only "trucking" but also other areas of labor that are under teamster contracts..

within some of these other areas there are sometimes niche jobs too...

example - at a brewery they may need a guy who has a CDL to hostle - or a guy with a CDL to run transfers around the city..

(i.e. some of the larger breweries have facilities in more than one location - and may store a needed item at a warehouse across town... "hey joe take a 53'r and go grab 20 skids of bottles from building 5..."

anyway - that is an option within another industry...

construction listings also may include CDL work...

but the big thing to keep in mind right now with freight is that no matter who is in office and no matter what the economy is doing we ARE in our slow season... we HAVE people laid off at this time of year...

if you go to a termnal or our website looking to put in an ap - the first thing they will tel you is how bleak it looks right now... they really make it seem like we are going under... BUT come april maybe even march - LOOK OUT! we hire like mad - and this year esp. since we will have a new contract (dont get me started on that thread) and some new facilities....

and as I have stated many times - as soon as the doors open for applications - I WILL POST the details (as they are available)

a lot of guys would stop by our terminal - and they told them no apps are been taken - lets say on a tuesday... they will not tell you when they are being taken... but lets say that thursday they hang the help wnated sign out... it is really screwwy - but that is how it is done.

once this freight change of ops goes into effect (a few weeks) we will know how many (if any) we are going to hire...

the economy put a huge cramp in our plans this year - and I am truely sorry I was not able to help anyone get into a job this year...

things are TOUGH all over right now - and once we upturn and after the election hopefully we will get rolling again with new guys and gals...
