Have you heard of Yellow? YRC might keep you afloat. Go Conway, you have more options.

Yellow doesn't buy companies to keep those companies in business, they buy companies to keep Yellow afloat.

knighton5,

Nice to see you back. I am glad you are making more money now than you ever have. Are benefits really the same as any other OTR company? If so, from what I have read on company employment sites, they are poor to fair at best. Most companies don't even tell you how much your contribution is much less for a family. It is interesting to call and enquire. I hope your benefits don't cost too much.

I, like you, truly enjoy my driving career. I am just not sure where you found the information that Union "truckers", remember this is a trucking website, are unhappy where they work. Can you provide any companies?

You know, I have gone back thru this site looking under "bad companies". I don't think I found one Union company that was posted as a bad company. However, there were quite a few, perhaps hundreds of non-Union carriers listed under bad companies. I for one, do not find that hard to belive. By the way, Crete was listed their as well as under "good company" posts. I'm glad yours is the latter.

Since you made your "how much do you make" comment, I feel we all deserve some answers from you.

You've stated that you are making more money than you ever have. Can you tell all of us your average monthly gross/net pay? If you have been there for more than a year, yearly gross/net. You might want to include how many days you spend on the road and how much time you are home each month and for how long.

You raised the question of benefits. Benefits should include, at the very least, medical, dental, optical and retirement. Does Crete provide you with all of them or just part of them? Please include your cost for each of those benefits. If you have a family, include those costs as well. I am not concerned with doctor co-pays unless you pay over $20.00 per visit.

We can get into more if you want. I sure look forward to your answers. I will be on vacation until Sept. 2 but I will have computer access from Vegas and Laughlin.

I average 900-1200 weekly depending on my miles and how much time I take off at home. I usually stay out 18-21 days then go home for 4 days, sometimes 5 or 6 days depending on my delivery dates. Hometime isnt a big issue now, since my kids are older ( I drove for Knight for about 4 years to be home more when they were younger ) my wife rides with me half the time also. I dont have a pay stub in front of me now, but I pay family med/den and is 65 a week ( or close to it ). That doesnt kill me financialy, my home is paid for plus I dont live in California or the Northeast where everything is a ripoff... Again I enjoy driving for Crete (since January 0.

Now if I drove LTL here in Oregon, I would have to work on a clock schedule at the bottom of a senority list or start as a dock worker. Ive been there done that. I would have to chain up alot since I live in Oregon. I used to drive with the guys up and down I-5 every week. Im not interested in that. My buddy drives Conway (non union) to Portland (union) and back, its a set schedule and he chains all winter (no choice). Where does safety come in? Not all drivers are equal, why would you have a driver chain when he either doesnt want to or isnt comfortable driving in it. Oh well, this is way off subject. DRIVE SAFE

That seems pretty respectable. How, in your opinion, does that compare with the rest of the industry?

This is where we differ greatly. I don't care how old my children are or if they are even out of the house. Being home every night and off weekends are a joy to me. In fact, if you ask most drivers, they would like the same as well. Obviously they can't. Since they are paid by the mile, hometime would and does cut deeply into their pay. What a shame. Living out on the road is expensive. Since you are gone for so long, have you figured out what it costs to live out there for 18-21 days? Food, laundry and toiletries just to name a few.

I dont have a pay stub in front of me now, but I pay family med/den and is 65 a week ( or close to it ).

Do they not provide vision insurance or retirement? You failed to mention those in your above statement. If they do, what is your cost?

I am happy that your home is paid off. I have 9 more years to go. It is expensive to live in S. Calif. My wife has family that lives in Oregon. I love the weather up there. I too enjoy driving for my company. I wouldn't be there if I didn't.

I don't think that you are that kind of a man. We all expect each of us to be honest with our posts.

My only retirement is 401K (no pension). If I could start over again, I would have started a 401K when I was 18 or 19 but at that age who thinks about retirement. I'm still kinda in that mind frame now but atleast I have some put away. I'm hoping our trust worthy government will support me when I retire (and you too), just think positive. Drive Safe
